Hello all, I just purchased my first 928 ('88 S4 AT)!
About 1 month ago, I decided I was going to finally get the car I've wanted for a long time. I started my search locally, but since I did not have much luck, I went on eBay and Cars.com. I found the exact car I wanted and without doing any research (or visiting this site), I went ahead and pulled the trigger.
About 1 hour later, I got scared. I called 2 friends that have or had a 928 and they reassurred me that my purchased should be fine. The car was purchased from a reputable dealership in Nevada and they had all service records.
As I was going through this site, I also learned about EuroWerks so the first thing I am going to do is take it to Jim Burton and have him do an inspection so I know exactly what to expect.
The car has 118,000 miles on it, Guards Red with tan interior; and GTS (?) wheels which look really sharp. I wanted a car that was original as possible, but the wheels look really nice.
I look forward to slowly fixing it up (labels on switches faded, the "928 S4" decal on rear bumper missing, passanger window sluggish,...mostly small cosmetic things).
I do have a question...the dealer is suggesting enclosed trasport from NV to NC, but the last car I purchased from Chicago was delivered via an open transport and aside from the dirt, it was just fine. I would prefer to save the extra cost for the enclosed transport (about $800) to mint out the car...any thoughts?
I'll let you know how my "blind" purchase turns out. Any other 928 owners in CLT on Rennlist? I want to start getting envloved in local events.

Yep, fly out there and drive it home.
One of the most enjoyable drives I ever had was bringing mine 1000 miles home.
That was a fun drive before I knew of Rennlist. Now on a 1000 mile drive I just worry about all the things that might break and destroy the car as I drive it down the road.
When I first got it I didn't know any better, just a nice enjoyable drive of a fine car.

Well, congratulations on your purchase. You are also near 928Specialists :-)
Get your inspection and if there are no significant issues, drive the car home. The open road is where it is in its true environment !

If you plan the route, taking into consideration weather and road conditions, and start a thread, I will promise you that you will very rarely be more than a couple of hours from emergency help from someone on this Forum.
And it is very possible that you will get offers of bed and breakfast along the way...

I had originally planned to drive it home, but having just returned from a 3 week vacation, I need to catch up at work. Also, not having driven the car (the seller did post a short video of it being driven hard and it looked just fine), I don't want any surprises in the middle of the county hundereds of miles from home or the seller.
I'll just have to wait it out and keep looking at pictures.

That sounds like a lot of fun Wally. Maybe if I can get a buddy to go with me, it would be 1 hell of a road trip!
Maybe I can even try to win back some of the purchase price...come on 7!

The MLK Monday holiday is coming up. Take one extra day off and you have four days to enjoy the trip. Fly out on Thursday evening, pick the car up Friday moring, spend an hour or two checking it out, and hit the road by noon Friday. Easy three-day trip, with an extra day for glitches.

Congratulations. Sounds like Wally has your trip planned for you. Spend some time on this forum and you'll learn that Wally know's best. Go ahead and get your plane ticket and make sure you've got your AAA membership and plenty of room on the credit card just in case.
I've driven them home to Atlanta from Colorado, Virginia, Florida, Connecticutt and Monterey, Ca. We had an unplanned stop due a failed LH on the way back from Ca. but were back on the road in short order thanks to the good folks on Rennlist (and the credit card). No problems at all on any of the other trips and no PPIs yet for me. Be sure to plan a stop in Atlanta on your way so we can meet you and your 928.

Welcome to the forum and the fun of a 928. I am the wrong person to advise you to drive I went as far a buying a car hauler to bring any car I buyt home.
The fun of the drive is very true as long as the car at LEAST gets a road survey, fluids, tires, brakes etc are in working order. In the 50 plus years of getting cars with my dad and now me I have more horror stories than fun trips to talk about. I guess it comes with age the older you get the less you want anymore problems.
Enjoy the car and remeber there are NO DUMB QUESTIONS!!!

Thanks everyone for all of the great input.
I went on MapQuest and started planning out the trip, but after taking everything into account I think I'll have it shipped for a few reasons:
1. Financial - after taking into account the plane tickets (for me and a buddy), gas, hotel and the money i would probably loose in Vegas, it would basically be a wash. It turns out that an enclosed transport will be about $1200.
2. Time - although a holiday weekend is coming up, I need be at work since a lot of my clients will still be open. Before I would drive it back, I would get an inspection done and if that causes delays to do any necessary work, that would just make it worse.
3. Mileage - I don't want to put 2200+ miles on the car just to get it home. I would rather put those miles on going to and participating in SITM. Besides, I have to go to Atlanta in the next couple of weeks to I'll get a few hours of interstate driving to really enjoy the car.
4. Most importantly - being a brown skinned male, buying a one way airplane ticket these days would raise so many alarms that I would spend more time getting through security than I would driving it back (just kidding, I love TSA agents).
Thanks again for all ot the input. By the way, I stopped by EuroWerks here in Charlotte today and met with Jim Burton. He was very nice; we spent a little bit of time just talking about my purchase and 928's in general. As soon as it comes in, I'll take it to him to have him check it out.
As soon as I can get some pics, I'll post them.
