Driver side looks good for TDC#1 (rotor's pointing to 3 o'clock) Can't tell on the passenger side where it's pointed (I'm snowblind from looking at the monitor all day) but it should also be pointing at 3 o clock.

EDIT: Maybe it's the angle but your pass side cam gear looks a bit retarded. Got a 32V'r?

Actually, the drivers side is a little further to the right compared to the passenger side.

Do your tick marks on the gears approximately match the recipricol marks on the back covers?

The 32V'r is a tool for fine tuning the timing.

He meant do you have Porken's cam adjustment tool, it's called a 32V'r.

No, I mean a 32V'r

Will allow you to get your timing set just so- some of the cheapest horsepower you'll ever not lose by assuring your timing is spot on.....

My mistake. It's a 32 valve. No, I don't have the 32V'r tool. This is my first TB and I'm acquiring tools as needed...

How did it run before the timing belt job? If ok then, good power, you are probably ok for reassembly.

You were unlikely to have changed it during the job unless you loosened the nuts holding the cam gears.

Later, after you get a 32V'r, you can pull the covers with a moderate amount of rework, not too hard, and fine-tune the timing.

It ran well before. I had to replace both cam gears along with the oil pump gear.

Since you replaced the cam gears, you really must check they are in time. It's possible the belt is a tooth off or just the cams are not exactly where they need to be. With a new WP, cams it's really a must do.

The problem, as I understand it, is that once you take off the cam gears you have noting to reference them back to the original position with regard to the cam wheel (three tabbed thingy the cam gear adjusts on). The only way to make sure the cams are in time (unless you indexed, before removing, the new gears to the old gears then indexed to the backing plate) is to remove the cam covers and set the cams using the special Porsche tool. From there you'll have a baseline from which to adjust the cams. You can use the 32v'r to set the timing but using it is going upon the assumption that the cams are at the factory setting.

There are many more knowledgeable ppl here than I and I might be mis-remembering the issue but I ran into this on my 85 unexpectedly. I was able to see on the back of the old cam gears the shadow of where the cam wheel was so that helped...you might be able to do the same.

If you remove the cam covers beware that there are issues with the 85-86 bolts breaking and I seem to recall some say they are a bear to get off while in the car. As you may already know, the TX group is a good group they should be able to lend a hand.
