The early 996 cars are know for numerous issues like bearing problems on the intermediate shaft where the "fix" is a replacement engine...do a bit of homework and focus on the 3.6 cars. There are reasons why the early 996s are so "affordable".

Really, hmmmm. with that in mind I think a real PPI is in order from a dealer. not just a "friend" going to drive it

Take note of how many early 996 ads say "engine replacement." With a 996 that's a good thing, but still well known problems, and the interiors are just not up to the same quality as earlier cars, especially the 928. Best bets in the 911 world are 993, late 964 and 87-89 Carreras, all fantastic drivers with excellent quality and values that will hold up well. I would love to add a 911 to my garage and there's an early Carrera for sale right now in the same color as my 928, very tempting. GLWS.

Yes it was taken at SITM by Eric, he takes great pic's. I think it's one of the nicest I have. I'll need to ask him for a Hi-res version.
I can understand being tired of a car, have you driven around in a 911 or owned one in the past? They are nice, just don't do it for me. I wish I could buy your set up, good luck that is a realy good price.

I'd check over on the 996 board, but to my knowledge you can't check the IMS without a bit of work so it will cannot be checked on a PPI. I agree the prices on these are very attractive, but a new engine at $10-$15k would kill me. I say keep the 928!

I drove one of these this past fall '04 996 (all wheel drive twin turbo) moded to 450 hp. It was fun, a bit cramped and looked harder to work on than the 928.
It drove OK, but as far as power goes my '85 w/the 150 hp shot of Nitrous or any SC 928 for that matter feels just as strong and sounds a lot (V8) better
But I am also biased, I think if you do it you will be back... so don't do it
