Default 82 porsche 928

I have an 82 porsche 928 euro 5 speed. I was just wondering with all i want to do if it would be more practical and money saving to get a newer 928 s4 or keep this car.

This cars interior is pretty shot and will need a whole new interior. Is it better to find different parts and ****** them up or just wait for a whole interior set. I like the newer s4 interior compared to the older ones.

Id like to do a wide body kit (from jacquemond as of this moment with an s4 rear bumper). If theres a cheaper one that looks similar, thatd be great too.

Also, i want to supercharge the engine. If i stay with this 928 would it be better to supercharge this engine or get a newer block and build that motor instead. Its the euro 4.7l. What are all the differnt types of superchargers for the 928's. Ive seen the vortech and the twinscrew so far. Also, is it difficult to swith out this engine for the newer engines?

I basically want a show car thats fast too. Would it be better to start from scratch on this one and go from the ground up or try to get a newer s4. Ive had this car since i was in high school and tore up the transmission but never got around to fixing it and am just now starting to get back into it. Im in the middle of swapping the tranny out right now. Which also brings up a question. How are the 928 5 speed trannys with boost?

I know all of this is going to cost quite a bit of money but im planning on this project to take quite some time and im doing all the work on my own with some help from friends so maintenance wont cost anything. Also, this is just a second car so i dont depend on it. And i will take pics of the progress of whatever im doing to share.

Ill take pics of how the car sits right now later this week as well so everyone can get a better idea of how this car is.

Any tips are greatly appreciated and thanks in advance

What color is your interior? I have one from a 1984 that is all redone BUT in vinyl.
Driver is power, passenger is not. Rear seats are also done. Not a PRO JOB but they are good if you want to sell yours instead of selling with the holes. I am in Aiken

simply stated you are best to start with an S-4 and 320 hp stock what you add to that is only $$$$$ but you have better brakes and suspension and with the shark tuner the ability to modify the injection maps.

Waveflux: I want something more personal and unique then just a plain gts. I also love superchargers. I used to have a Shelby GT500 before i got married and i loved the feel of boost and sound from the supercharger.

Irpman: Sorry I want all black leather interior. thanks for the offer though. Ill keep the offer in mind too.

james bailey: would it be more cost effective to get the s4 or to get a motor to build on the side? Can the s4's motor handle boost without modifications? Also will i have to do anything to the s4's tranny to handle the extra power. I figure if i have to do too much that i would just start with this car since its paid off and just use the extra money for mod money but if the s4 doesnt take too much then id get one of those instead and build upon it.

GTS is the king of the hill.

Check out the search key, its awesome. Hours of reading. I have a lowly 79 but she's cool. For the S4 there is a SC kit Murph, 928 Motorsports, and a sweet twin screw from 928 specialists. Probably the sweetest engine bay ever.

For turbo Khun has a awesome twin turbo setup.

Or stroke it to 6.5L for 20k to 30k from what I understand.

Lots of options and do what you want. You will never get your money back so build something you want and drive her forever!

Tranny is not a problem, go with a late model!

thanks stephen for the info. im leaning towards building the 82 and having building an engine on the side so the car isnt just sitting around. Im just thinking that the 82 will be exactly the way i want it if i build it from the ground up.

Do you have a Euro or a Euro S, both were made in 1982?

Vin will show how it came from the factory, but best to check the Motor ID as well (stamped into a rectangular flat spot on the front of the top of the block directly below the passenger side radiator hose, starts with M28/ ).

Either way an early Euro would not be my first choice for boost. It has no brains, no chip to tune it with, its all mechanical pressures etc. With the S4 you get much more sophisticated engine management including the fairly critical knock detection, and a couple of good tools for tuning via chips etc.

Someplace around 450 rwhp the 5 speed will be unhappy, and an early one a slow shifter even when it is happy.

danglerb - im not sure exactly. ill have to look at it when i take the pics. How hard is it to swap the motor for an s4 motor? Itd prolly be ideal to build the motor on the side and have the car running still. Also, thanks for the info bout the tranny? Wheres the best place to get a short shifter for it? I hate how long the shift points are from each other.

Also no one has answered the question bout the interior. Im jw if its cheaper to hold out for a whole interior from a newer 928, get parts here and there, or send it all in to get redone.

I know im asking a lot of questions but im just trying to get all my facts straightened out. Also i have searched as well.

thanks everyone for the help

Personally I like it. The 16v engine has a lot of benefits including non-interference (euro S is debatable, if not interference they are very very close), and if you prefer the original style like I do, then you have a good year to start with. If you have the S engine that's good - 300hp right out of the gate. Supercharging even an S engine is not a big deal as long as you use a modern EFI system on it. 928 Motorsports has a nice kit based on the Electromotive TEC GT management system for a reasonable price that will allow supercharging even a high compression engine. Couple that with 928MS supercharger kit and you'll have an engine that can put down 450hp easily. Definitely upgrade to the later transmission with the BW synchros. While not necessarily stronger it is MUCH easier to drive. I've got a freshly-rebuilt early box in my car and it's the single thing about the car I really want to upgrade. Yeah I just described my own plans.

My first 928 was an '81 and I became really attached to it. I decided I was going to build it to what I wanted it to be. Bought some new seats, new Borla exhaust, lots of other stuff. I bought a '85 euro engine with plans to have that installed. But ultimately I decided there was so much to change in order to get it where I wanted it to be that it just made more sense to sell it and buy a 928 that was closer to what I wanted. I sold the '81 and also the euro engine and bought a GT. For me that was the right move. I'll probably get a supercharger on the GT when I get back to the States. There's always something to fix / improve, I found it's better to start with a more recent platform. Just my two cents.
