Default Swapped 89 S4 Auto trans into 84

I went to rebuild my 84 transmission due to reverse lag and broken parking pawl.
Case was broken, apparently from the impact of the pawl snapping.

So, unable to find a spare case, I bought an S4 trans, tube and cables from a car down to blown engine. Condition is unknown, but all indications are good that it will work. If so, I am way, way ahead. If not, I'll remove and rebuild.

It was a tight fit due to the S4 TC housing being about 1 inch bigger in diameter than the 84 unit.

I used 89 Bowden cable (with a length modification near the motor bracket), 84 shifter cable, 84 wiring harness, 84 axle flanges with grooves for CV gaskets and a Constantine clamp that was on-hand.

Here are a few pictures.

Often requires using a big hammer to open up a little more room for the trans...it does move around a bit since the engine and trans are rubber mounted.

Jim, thanks, I wacked it a bit with a bfh, but it might need more mod.

I've got to put some axles together, hang the pipes, and should get to test it soon.

Mission Complete.

The 84 car is now operational with the 89 transmission.

I've not driven at highway speeds yet, but managed to explore upshifting in the neighborhood here sans plates and insurance of course. Smooth shifting. No clunking of trans against the tighter tunnel, so far. I really did not widen the tunnel, it was too tough to bend.

Thanks to Stan Shaw for scooping the car up and fostering it for a while, Jadz for the mechanical assist and Iccy928 for the transmission and locks. Golden!!!!

Great job, especially on jack stands.

Hope all goes well when fully operational.

Keep us all posted.
