Default What is the Going Rate for a 4.7 Euro M/28/9,11,12 CIS motor?

Inspired by Iwanna928's thread and reading so many threads on Euro v. US motors, I am beginning to think, after all of this work and money, I may be better off putting the VIN designated motor in this car instead of the M28/13 L-Jet motor that I have to go in now.

My main attraction to the 13 motor is that I understand it more than the others. It is very similar to my 944 (Bosch Motronic/AFM 928 v. L-Jet/AFM). With this set up, I know I can smog it. I also realize that certain parts are more expensive (rings, etc.), but the lion share of parts are not. CIS is foreign to me .

I am not terribly horsepower horny (I drive a NA 944 afterall). However, I am beginning to think about doing this car "right" (having the right motor for the chassis and more horsepower are starting to make more sense).

What do you think? Given my circumstances, what would you put in? What is the going rate for a Euro motor? Thanks.

I may know of a CIS Euro S car that "maybe" $1k might buy, but its rough and hasn't run, so plan on rebuilding the CIS. Generally speaking, buying just the motor will cost more than the whole car, and you should be able to get a few bucks out of the rest of the parts.

You should be able to buy a fully functional early 4.7L Euro motor for under $1k...maybe under $750! A late Euro 4.7L with all the computers to run it (just one box I think) is really probably a $1k to $1300 motor... YMMV and it all depends on who owns it and how bad/much they want to get rid of it really...

If I found a fully functional Euro motor for $750 I would buy it. I don't think its a reasonable expectation to find better than a rebuildable core for less than $1k. I certainly haven't found one yet.

84/86 Euro S uses a MAF and two brains, same as US for spark, and similar for fuel, but with a manual mixture setting instead of O2 circuit. Expect to pay more for a good one, but cheaper to fix than CIS if its not running.

I know of TWO Euro S motors that sold for $700 and $750 respectively. We have even seen S4 motors for less than $1500! If you can buy an S4 motor for $1kish, then a Euro S motor SHOULD be less than that!

I paid $300 for a 79 euro motor that had sat for two years in a garage. PO said it was running when removed for a chevy conversion, but I bought it for spare parts so didn't care if that was true.

True, I would be tempted to rebuild it and then replace mine if it had been.

Yea for sure...always nice to have an extra functional motor on hand too! If you could get a running 4.5L even or US 4.7L for a few hundred bucks isn't it worth putting on the shelf?! I say YES IT IS...if you own an OB or S anyway.

it all depends how bad you want 1 and the condition it is in.......$2500 for a running 100k engine is pretty standard.....sometimes you can find a whole car for 1k????? Just depends how long you want to wait and the condition of the engine. I paid $1400 for my 1980 euro "S" 5 speed 2 years ago. I prob have 6k into the car as it sits. You would be better off finding a whole car running or not and having it shipped to you!

Just my 2 cents

Lots of good info here. Thank you. I have budgeted this car, and I will have around $6k in this car when finished. This budget is for and includes the 4.5 motor. As it stands, there is no turning back for me. I am sure my car will be a very nice DD when done. That said, it will be a really nice driver with the US 4.5 motor in it

Are people gobbling up the parts off of these motors for hybrid projects?

If you are not horsepower horny, I would stick to the US 4.5, Ljet. I don't think there is enough of a purist market for these cars to worry about making them fully correct. The 4.5 is a fun motor, truly non interference, and you are comfortable with the fuel management system. Plus the fuel mileage is better. Plus you are much closer to having it on the road in this configuration, which is goal number 1. Plus it is a little easier to add boost. If the car does not feel fun enough for you when you have it running, look for a '82 competition group tranny with the lower gear ratio....but I think that you are gonna enjoy it compared to your N/A 944.
OTOH, you may have smog test trouble if your vin says you should have one fuel system and you have another. My 928s got sent to test only every time even though they always came out super clean.

You mean like this one I've got sitting next to my beer fridge??
Was going to put it in the 79, but the GTS has got me too busy.
