As far as 18's... I don't need anything larger than a 17 to fit over my brakes. I have driven some incredibly fast track cars than were running 16's and the slight side wall flex of 17's vs 18's is not too much of a concern either. All 18's do for me is cost me more for the rubber. I'm sure I'll have to go that route... but a 17x10 would be perfect, better yet... a 17x10 Cup 2... that's the ticket.
Ask some of the racing guys what they run for width and backspacing/offset and look at pictures of their setups and how close the tire is to the fender top. On a track you want as little ride height as possible. Maybe the 10" wheels from that link are a little less than 10"? I once test mounted my old 10" ET65 wheels in the front and it hit the top of the fender and wasn't even fully settled yet. YMMV.

The widest OEM wheels suitable for the front IMHO are:
  • Cup Racer 17x9.5 ET68 (basically a wider Cup I), part number 965.362.128.05, Devek and 928 Specialists used to sell these.

  • Cup II 17x9 ET70, part number 993.362.128.01, I have a pair of these which will be going on the front of my GT in the near future.

  • Cup II 17x8 ET70, part number 993.362.126.01, I have a pair of these which will be for sale soon.

Hold on... so Christmas has come early... a 17x9 Cup II et70 does exist... This is great news. I'm on a mission to find myself a set of those... Thanks Jarrod!

Happy hunting. When The Google only returns 2 pages to your query, and the vast majority of those hits aren't references to items for sale, you know they're rare. I got really lucky when I found mine.

Oh BTW, Porsche still has NOS on hand. I'm told they're available for ~ $1,300...EACH.

Of course... I would expect nothing less. Why are the et70's so rare? Did they only come from the factory on the rear of 993 turbos? Or are they even more rare than that?

Unless you find someone who doesn't know what they are selling, they are not worth it. You can have a custom-made forged wheel set made in any offset you want for under $3k.

All I've read is the 8's and 9's in ET70 were part of a "Winter Wheel" option for the 993 back in about 1995. How many people buy winter wheels for Porsches? Who knows.

These were fitted to the rear of the 993, but the offset makes them well suited to the front of our 928s.

I think there are 8" ET70 NOS available as well for ~ $1,200 each.

True, but there are those of us out there like myself who like the stock look of a factory wheel, but do not find 7.5" width up front acceptable. For us the options are rather limited, and the prices (in the used market) are reflective of that.

19's overpower the 928

So this is where some have chosen to comment on my new wheels??? Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion and wheels are a very polarizing subject I know. Larger wheels are most certainly done for aesthetic reasons b/c it is a fact they are going to weigh more, cost some hp/tq and the rubber is very expensive. Personally, I don't want to race the GTS so I don't really care about the small loss in power (the x-pipe and GT resonators will get it back anyway + plus some!). Most seat of the pants barometers here will never be able to feel a loss of power anyway and since I won't be putting a ton of miles on it the cost of the rubber is really not an issue either.

I've been around long enough to remember when the prevailing thought was that 18" wheels on a Porsche were too big and the rubber was way cost prohibitive. Remember those days? Hell, I remember when 17 inch wheels were thought to be HUGE! What I would say to those that don't care for larger wheels (not just mine as I didn't do it for anyone other than myself) is; time to step into the present guys! IMHO, 17s look ridiculously small on most 928s and 18's look tiny small as well..... especially the step lip 18s! Having said that, I know wheels are a very personal choice and that was NOT meant to be personal toward anyone. You have the wheels on your 928 you like. Great!

I've got 20" wheels on a SL55 and the CLK63 Black Series came stock with 19s and like those cars, I don't feel the 19s over power the 928. I considered the Techart replicas in 19" too and there is a Ruf (in both original Ruf and replica) wheel in a 19 that I also really like. I wanted something I've not seen on a 928 b/f..... I honestly think this is a case where some are just not used to seeing 19 wheels on a 928 b/c there are not many out there? IMHO, it brings the car more up to date with the current look of high performance cars out there.

Chuck, what year and model porsche did you use to order the wheels? In a past post did you state that you thought of running 18's in the front and 19's in the rear? Did you think that it might look better or was it a fitment issue? How do they ride on the street? Joe

I did say that and a set of 18" fronts were delivered today. My thought is that I may not be able to drop the front with the 19s w/o the risk of rubbing issues and based on the offset on the 18s I know there will be no issue. I have not installed them to measure but at first glance the 18s look too small compared to the 19s so I may not lower the front as much if at all. New coilovers and sway bars may also help lower the risk of potential rubbing issues on the 19s by stiffening things up a bit. When I install the 18s I'll make the decision about which way I'm going to go. A fellow lister is interested in buying the 18s if they do not work for me.

I used a 993 or 996, don't really remember for sure. May have done both to compare offsets?

I cannot really comment on the ride yet as I only drove it around the block after I mounted them. Waiting to get my 32mm spacers so I can lower the risk of rubbing in the rear with the stock GTS spacers.
