Fitment depends on the manufacturer and model for any given tire size. it is best to reference the manufacturer's specifications for rim size when choosing a tire/rim combination.

Im racing with 305s on the 10s, without any isses what so ever.
Ive done the 245 on the 7.5s as well, but i did go taller in sidewall because it would make it fit better. 245x45, not 40 on the 17s.
275 on a 9 is pushing it, but on an 8.5, its pushing it a little more.![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Well, for the rear of my car, Mercedes specify a 275/35! but that is with genuine AMG wheels, which are 9" wide. Mine are only replicas, and hence are 8.5 wide.
I would imagine that Jims 275 tyres were fine on an 8.5" rim because they would have been higher profile, because a GL is an SUV.
Mark, what tyre is that you have at the back? 305/30 R18? Even the spec for that says no smaller than 10.5"
I'm half tempted to just buy them and mount one to see what it's actually like. I'm sure I could easily sell them on again if they are no good, and not lose anything.

Ben, I have the 305s on all 4 corners. the 305s on the front are on 10" rims and that is the same as a few other racers us. Keep in mind, thats a lot of laps in the most demanding use of these tires with NO wear or handling issues. the sidewall looks straight as well. It is a safe fit. Ive also put the 335s on the 11s, which is also used by other racers on occasion. It looks a little pinched on the rear with toyos, but straight up and down sidewall with the hoosiers. the only drawback there with the toyos, is that the outside of the tire, doesnt get used as it has a radius that the hoosier doesnt have when on that 11" rim. (on a 12" rim, it is more flat to the outside of the tire contact surface)

A lot can depend on the individual tire, not all 275 / 35 – 18 tires are the same size.
I’ve seen over a 1 inch difference between different brands of the same “size” tire.

If you mount wide tires on narrow rims the side walls are pinched in at the rim which allows the rim to shift side to side and actually lifts part of the tread off the ground under high side loads. It is not unsafe just limits the grip and the car may feel less stabile. The tire do not fall off the car is not really unsafe.....just handles worse corners slower than it could with narrower tires. The best handling is when the sidewalls are wider at the rim or l l less deformation of the tread lifting of the inside off the road ! And again tire sizes are the width of the widest part of the sidewall distance as measured on a specifies rim width. Tire rack specifications page have a rim width stated so you can see what each company decided to use for the rim when they measured the width.....interesting to compare tread widths from company to company BECAUSE that often varies greatly for the same " size" . Last I heard it is how much rubber that touches the road that matters most
If your sidewalls are not pinched in ! And truck and SUV tires are often very wide for the rim used with high sidewall which balloon out giving it that big width number while the tread width may be much less.

Well I ordered them yesterday and they just arrived.
They are dated 49/05, so just about 4 years old... so not too old. Look great though, just as new tyres should! No damage, cracking etc.
I'll go to my local tyre shop tomorrow and see what they look like mounted.
If worst comes to the worst, I can always sell them on or even keep them for the back of the 928!
