no, they are completely different animals.

928 has a Porsche tranny,
The 951 was an audi tranny.

ok thanks

i havent realyl gotten to dig into it, but my 1982 928 is stuck in third gear, the clutch still feels great, but the linkage can go forward and back but not side to side.

any ideas what the problem might be?

You have a failed front ball cup. and the rear universal joint will need to be addressed too.

go to www.928srus.com there is a number on the site call and discuss your options with Roger. There is a couple of options depending on what your preferance is.

If it could move around all directions, then it would be the front ball cup, the fact that you are limited to front to back movement (and does anything happen, like going from 2nd to 3rd, or 4th to 5th??) then, it might be in the transmission.

I disagree Mark.

If it is in any gear when the ball cup pops off then one could move the lever for and aft, but the rod to the back will not rotate thus preventing a side to side motion.

And Joey the reason I automatically assumed manual is due to the origonal request of using a 951 gearbox. They are one of the stronger boxes in the audi, I mean 924/944/968 line up. And it is common to use them when higher power mods are done.
the autos in all of those cars make them DOGS.
