Default PPI in Washington State on 89 928GT

Hi all,

looking to purchase a 1989 928GT with 18K miles in WA State. Car has been serviced for the past 16 years at Barrier Porsche in Belleview, WA. Any recommendations?

If it's in the Bellevue area then Lief Johnson would be your best bet (he's just north of there in Woodinville). I'll see if I can dig up his number. If the car is closer to the Tacoma area, I can lend a hand.

Found his contact info..:

Gerber motorsports in Seattle has always treated me well, and are definitely well versed in our cars.

Wow Kahled! You're buying the $39k 89 GT? Super nice car and will certainly be a record high price for an 89 GT that will probably stand for quite some time! Exchange rate make the price for realistic for you? Good luck, I'm sure that car is as nice as it seems.

Tom and Paul,

thanks for the contact points, i will be buzzing them to see what can be done and who is closer to the car.

Chuck,

nice to hear from you, and i'm saddened to see Kermit go . Yeah i have decided to get the GT. The guy seems pretty nice and he is the second owner and the car seems to be in great shape. I will get some items revised in it though like all the rubber under the intake, other rubber components, maybe the engine mounts and shocks (the time wear items) then ship it to me. On another note, i will also be getting a 91 S4 which is also listed on auto trader, and it has 23k miles on it...

91 S4

89 GT

What are your thoughts?

P.S. if anyone knows more about those cars, the feedback will be appreciated before i jump in...

Lief did the PPI on the 86 5 speed I sold to Dennis Burford (his name here on Rennlist) and missed a bunch of items.

Fried O2 sensor, Motor Mounts ect...

He also missed why the Torque tube on my old Black 87 S4 failed after 20k miles (Vacuum was way high).

IMHO he is a ok mechanic but not very thorough.

Tom and I have gone over stuff on other 928's done by Gerber at our shop as well. I think any shop can be thorough when they want to, and not very thorough when they are pressed for time.
Khaled, I would suggest you pick the shop or mechanic of your choice to go through the mechanicals and do the PPI, but also have someone local here, Tom (who is an '89 GT owner himself) or myself do an inspection on the car, to look at it from a 928 owner's perspective and look at those things specific to an '89 GT to make sure those items are in order. We could inspect the GT at the owner's home, or try to inspect it at the PPI shop while its on the lift if we can coordinate it.

I have known about the 89 GT and talked to the owner several times over the last 8-10 years. The pictures he's using are ~10 years old and I told him a few weeks ago he needed to get some better for current pictures. Mileage hasn't gone up much in the last few years. Not sure why you'd want to change all the rubber stuff; it's not been in a dry climate? My guess is it's a great car but a PPI is always recommended.

The S4 looks like a nice car too. Don't recognize the exhaust though. Would be nice if it had supple leather but that's just me. Is this the same car that had 18k miles on it a few months ago and was for sale in IA? Again, do a PPI......

I'd be interested in what you're paying for the GT, if you're willing to share it with me please send a PM.

Best of luck with the purchase of both.

BTW, what happened to your project 928?

Chuck,

thanks for the feedback. My project 928 is still there on my mind, but will take some time to realize including the shipping of my S4 back to the US. I really want to redo the car grounds up, which will entail a re-hot dip galvanization of the body and replacing of major componentry. I expect it to take about a year to do the project so i am still doing my homework whenever free to come up with the full picture as i want to do it right.

As for the 89 GT, i am going forward with the purchase post PPI. The 89 seems to be the best of breed, what are your thoughts on the matter?

for the 91 S4, it does have an RMB (which i will replace with the stock exhaust), seems to be in a nice shape and i am willing to buy it immediately, but need a PPI... does anyone know of anyone really good in Florida near Ft. Meyer?

Glad to hear your project is still on!

I too love the 89 GT and if I were to buy a GT, I would want an 89. Probably b/c I had one b/f and really loved it. It's also the only GT that came with sport suspension as standard and the forged wheels make it special. Great cars!

The RMB on the S4 looks like a custom made unit as I don't recognize the tips. Could it be a after market unit?

Keep us posted.
