Fraken-shark. That IS funny.
Here's the cars story. Pretty much had its entire life in Florida. Guy that had it there had this car and a warmed-over 930. He wanted the 928 to put out more ponies than the original motor-his mech in Fl had a crate '89 S4 motor that was bought originally to be put in a boat-guy died-never happened. so the motor and correct ECU went into this car. Done at~90K miles. Had headers and glass paks put on,big red brakes and the 18" cup wheels. was already lowered.I bought the car about 9 years ago-put maybe 2-300 miles a year on it. I put 5 different exhaust systems on it in 10 days time until it got the correct note. Sounds brutal. Bought a Jacquemond body kit for >5k to put on, decided the car looked too good in original state and didn't want the idea it was changed d/t an accident that I opted out and only put the rear wing on. Still have the rest of the kit. I have a few other rides including an F40,CGT,RUF BTR,Countach,Diablo-others. Friend of mine wanted the car BAD-sold it to him, He put the fake carbon fiber kit on and more miles on it in 8 months than I did in 8 years! Timing chain on one bank jumped-bent some valves and it sat as he made payments on it he couldn't afford, let alone afford the repairs. As no good deed shall go unpunished-I paid off his loan and had the engine fixed-yup have the receipts for 7K + /put new tires on the back-fronts have 4K mi or so. fixed the air which blows ice cold-was gonna give it to my 16yo daughter-but the ex nix'd that 'cuz no air bag.Thought I'd use it as a daily driver-but didn't. I hate selling cars-too many tire kickers and i have zero patients. soooo friend of mine owns MOTO-EXOTICA-sent this along with a '72 240Z with a 355 blower motor show car to his fall auction(also never drove-tried this class of gatherings once-meh the crowd). Z sold, Frankie bid to $8500-dunno, probably shoulda took it. and here we are. Sorry for the novel-esp as my 1st post-thought I'd clear some of the mystery before I started thinking it was a POS myself.

I have seen and heard this car in person, I'll be happy to vouch for it and the owner....its amazing to read some of the opinions and leaps in here (never thought it was possible to do a ppi by reading an ebay ad)

Some may consider it easier to swap engines.

Unless the seller has receipt for the rebuild, assume it to be more of a refresh. Better yet, assume it's a drop and swap.
The fact the valve covers and intake are painted lead me to believe it may have had at least a refresh.
My assumption was based on if proper maintenance was done.

Looks like a well cared for car in my opinion.

carsinxs- Welcome to the board. I appreciate your explanation of the car's history, and believe it to be very helpful to those who might be interested in the car.

My earlier comments were based on this: Generally speaking, the further you venture from stock the more difficult it will become to sell and the lesser the price you will receive.

Case in point: A very nice '93 GTS 5-speed with 60K miles for sale on this board recently. Stock, could probably bring $35K-45K. However, this car had a non-original stroker engine (albeit from a big name stroker shop in the 928 community) as well as some high dollar suspension upgrades. Probably $30K worth of work, at the minimum. End result, no takers at an asking price under $35K.

I think your car, minus the wings and carbon fiber, is quite striking. I love the 18" Cup II replicas and factory sport seats, in fact, I wish I had both on my car. The non-original S4 engine does have more rated power vs. the stock engine, but as in the case above, I think it narrows the pool of potential buyers and can have a detrimental impact on value.

Anyway, I apologize if my earlier remarks were offensive and wish you good luck with the sale!

No worries. As far as adding/changing things on a car and the resultant value. I agree. I have a '79 930 w/'94 body-3.6L and 5speed tranny. None of it done by me. Peter Dawes did the tune on the MOTEC and a few minor other bits @ the "tune" of 13K!!! Peter goes on to say that it is the fastest street car they ever had in thier shop. The engine isn't some protec gernade motor making stupid HP waiting to emplode. It is making stupid HP due to the fact that nearly $150,000.00 went into the build. boarders on hard to believe insanity. Prior to the tuning, it turned the 1/4 mile in 10.4 sec @ 140mph on street tires. Is it a 180-200,000 car? Hell no. But it is still worth more than a stock '79 930 IMHO, albeit to a more limited crowd.
Can't compare the 928 to this, but and as PeeWee sez it's a big butt, at the price range these cars have arrived at, I still think this '85 is worth more with a fresh, internally unmodified higher HP, lower milage S4 motor than the likely tired stock version with what would be > 95K miles now . Again, that's IMHO.

carinxs,
How many miles are on the new crate motor?

FWIW, those 85-86 32V motors are a great motor. Easy HP mods can be made. Better cams.

Thanks for sharing your story.

The reason for the crate was what I was told when I went to buy it originally. According to the previous owner, it should have ~ 7-8K on crate. I'm certain there's <200 mi on rebuild.
