Default The new Radar Detector

So as I was busting 139 and watching Herman pass me in his GTS at 3rd Coast, I started thinking...Would a LEO put me in jail for this or just give me a $1,000 ticket?

I just ponyed-up the dough for an Escort 9500. It seems higher speeds are coming more and more often these days. I think V1's seem to be the prefered detector for Shark enthusiasts, but the GPS, learning ability, and speedometer won out over the arrows for me. The reviews are all over the board, but the technology just seems to have passed up the venerable V1 with all the cool 9500ix bells and whistles.

Next time I won't have to poke back to the hotel as you guys catch up to me so I can hide behind your detectors.

139 is the roadway you were on, right? Incriminating evidence and all that, I suppose. HA HA HA

Not sure if your statement is an endorsement or complaint against the V1.

I think it's some of both. Some like it, others don't.

I've got a Passport 8500. Nothing protects against laser.

I have little use for the arrows of the V1 and would rather have the speed camera GPS of the 9500. I don't need to know where the radar is coming from, I just need enough warning to slow down.

I don't care what type of Radar you have...... its still going to take you a **** ton of time to slow down to 70mph from 140mph.

That is not true at all, I can jam to gun on most models of lasers.

The indicator arrows are one of those things that you might not think much of without having used them, but you soon find you couldn't live without. It's not a gimmick or a bell or a whistle - the directional arrows provide a HUGE chunk of information that no other detector provides. You don't have to slow down every time your detector beeps - the arrows tell you where the signal is coming from, which helps immeasurably in understanding whether the threat is real or not.

For a simple example, say you are running down the highway and pass one of those big light-up road information signs on the other side of the road (the ones that they like to put radar emitters on) and the detector starts beeping and showing you the threat is from behind... no need to worry, because you know the radar is coming from the sign you just passed, not Mr. LEO up the road.

I'm a V1 fan and user, but I do not diss the Passport products, because they are pretty damned good and offer a fairly well-balanced trade-off of features compared to the V1. Photo radar is a big issue is some areas, so the Passport may be better for people in those areas. For my needs, the V1 is the way to go.

What you need is a way to hook the radar detector up to the brake light switch so that when you hit the brakes with the radar detector going off...no brake lights. Well, maybe until you get down to below 60 mph.

I'm with the guys on the V-1. The arrows are a definite boost. Love mine.

X2.. once you understand the concept and know how to use the additional info it is invaluable.

Plus it's fun to speed up when the alert is to the rear and watch as the signal weakens :-)

Had mine since 2002 and have been ticket free since. Mine is a bit outdated but still works pretty good.

That's approximately what one must do coming into Turn 1 at Road America in a stock-block 928 prior to turn-in. Without consulting my data-logger, I'm guess-timating it takes 2 to 3 seconds of thresh-hold braking to go from 140 to 70.

Now if you're hit with laser of course, it is all over. However, if it's radar shot at someone else, hauling your car down to legal-speed in 2 to 3 seconds gives you a pretty decent chance of escaping unscathed. Bonus is that the radar detector just paid for itself many times over from the would-be costs of fines and increased insurance in the future.

Those little arrows have bailed me out too many times. Plus it's nice to know if there is more than one signal coming at you.
