Why did you pull the exhaust maniforld off the heads? They will come off with the heads. Or at least they do on a LHD 928.
I tried taking the exhaust manifold loose at the cat bypass but the bolts were frozen. By removing the exhaust studs, I was able to pull the heads with the exhaust in place.
Pulling the motor seems intimidating, but it will be easier. Just the time trying to torque the cam carriers will make up for the pulling time. However, beware of the 'while we're in there' disease. It is much more virulent when the motor is pulled and can result in a 1 week project turning into a 1 year project.
Pull it, if the 16v heads haven't been off in a while (or ever) the cam cover fasteners can bind in their bores and break the bolts. Even with the engine out I've had a difficult time getting the cam covers off (depending on the engine).

Thanks for the advice guys - I think I will go for the engine pull as I also want to do engine mounts, OPG, upper suspension bar bushes, timing belt etc etc. I have all winter to do it so there is no rush.
Ken - I live in Waterloo - just outside Broadford so not far from Portree.
Good choice. Pulled mine when faced with the same dilemma and it is a PITA to work on in the car .. and agree its a pleasure to work on when on a stand. It means you do all the things you want and need to do in half the time .. and properly. Decided to take mine out at 8 one night by myself (first time) ... was out and totally dismantled 8 hours later.
