anyone know of a compatable replacement piston ring set. i thought of replacing my rings as i will be there anyway. other than original porshe rings i have seen some advertised but they have a 944 part number so i'm sure they would only work on say 87- 91 100 mm pistons. any thoughts. just thought i would ask before spending 1300 on a set.

p.s. i have a new set of rod nuts i don't need 30.00 and t. belt tensioner and other related components i'm not gonna use 250.00

why would the regular 100MM rings not work? Same bore. S4, 944(edit)?

H is right the 951 rings will work fine.
I have a new set in stock for $270.

with the little experience with these engines i'm concerned about the 944 number not crossing over to the 928. i've searched high and low and found nothing. I'm being cautious as i would hate to trash this engine by running inappropriate rings

Normal Porsche 100mm ring set will not work. AFAIK 2nd ring is 0.1mm thinner in GTS than in all other 100mm pistons used in 928 and 944. This means 2nd 951 ring will not fit to GTS piston. I really would hope I'm wrong but think I'm not.

Part number is different for GTS so ignore my comments.

There can be difference between '92 and '93-95 GTS pistons. If cheap set would have worked in my case I would have used them. 8 GTS sets I got had several rings which had 0.1-0.2mm too much end gap in them.

928 103 906 26 = $1228 the set of 8.
Probably only in Germany so I can get them in two to three days if that helps.

Make sure you check your connecting rods because if you have the old 1R rods, you will need to replace all of them:

$1000 reasons why it would be great if 951 set works. If original 2nd ring is ok I think 951 1st and oil ring can be used.

I'm good in the connecting rod category. 2R rods! i have 32 brand new con rod nuts p/n 9281031702 but sixteen of them need new home. if not, on the shelf they go.

Here's a thought, way out from the left field: If the second ring of GTS pistons is thinner than that of 951, why not machine the second ring groove of the GTS piston to accept the 951 ring? Rebco Machine charges $6.75 per ring groove, which amounts to $54 plus shipping. That's a hassle, but not $1k.

At the same time, you can have them drill those fubar oil holes in the GTS pistons and balance the pistons. Overall, if you look at those prices at Rebco's site, they are quite reasonable. Everybody working with rare engines swears by them at speedtalk.com. Haven't used them yet, but likely will.

That rebco machine inc. offers good value, at least based on their price list. Also, the owner's email is listed on the web page and he appears to be doing much of the work. The brand is strong on speedtalk.com. I am planning to give them a shot next time I have to do something to a set of pistons.

one other concern was the compatability of whatever the material the 944 rings are made of that it is suitable to run in the GTS cylinder bore
