What kind of spray gun, paint and materials are you using?

Ive done plenty of plastic model airburshing and am becoming more and more interested in the art airbrushing and painting my car some day. Seeing some of the stuff a SEMA last week just blew me away what can be done.

Id love to paint my car my self...but...as Dirty Harry would say.." a mans gotta know his limitations".

Heinrich, there are two things I've learned in this process.

1. Theres a reason why high end paint jobs cost so much.

2. Painting cars is a hard way to make a living.

Looking good Shawn! Watch wet sanding that primer bro, it'll hide stuff underneath it that you won't see till the solvents start their "race for the top". If you have already dry sanded till 400g on a DA, then I think it's fine. Then wet sand with 600g as it cuts as much as say a 500g (not that they make that grit). I believe it is better to dry sand all the way to 400 and do the hard spots with 400 then 600 by hand. Then clean and paint. Wet sanding, for me, is too risky for the highest level paint jobs. Can't wait to see that thing done!

Very good Mark. 800g would definitely put you in the comfort zone. Any adhesion issues going this fine?

Your sanding academy lessons have taught you well, my son! Always block or sponge.

----

Anyone who is sitting at home thinking of doing this and hasn't done it before, consider how much time you think it will take for sanding, and multiply that by ten to get a realistic estimate. Same with the mess, the cost of materials, impact on other things going on at the time, costs of parts for the project like gaskets, seals, etc. Get a pro to shoot the final color and clear for you. Learn from them for your next projects; your 928 is not a good school car, since flaws show up so nicely. BTDT, got the multi-colored shirt.

I agree with Bob. I stripped my MGB down to bare metal and did the whole work-up on it about 20 years ago. I will NEVER do that again. My hat is off to anyone with the patience to do this themselves.

If anyone wants to learn to paint.......

Look up the nearest Carquest paint store....They offer very reasonable classes to get you going. With modern base/clear and High volume low pressure spraying with some good prep work you can acheive excellent results.

Occasionally they have "Star Classes" Last one I took was with Jon Kosmoski from House of Kolor. This man is a fantastic teacher........ just about relearned everything I knew. When we were done I painted this Fender in under 20 mins! Even got Jon to sign it....great guy.

Do not be afraid...... pick up some old hoods n fenders from the scrappie and have a go!
