Default OMG! Check out this Nissan Z mod

Google Porsche 928 Turbo V8 Swap - HybridZ . Of interest is that this mod, if successful, will mate a conventional tranny to a 928 engine and dump the TT.

Their project is putting the 928 engine with a conventional transmission into a Datsun 240Z - very cool.

I fail to understand the want or desire to "dump the torque tube" or to disrupt the balance of the 928 by moving the transmission right behind the engine.

Also, there isn't much room behind the motor for a transmission. You would have to widen the tunnel which would protrude into the cabin.

That's cool. If only someone like this would pull the 928 transmission out of a 928 and put in a stronger 6-speed from another car like a corvette or viper or something. With access to CAD and CNC machining tools like that, it may not be that difficult.

Dan,
I think you should look at their physical sizes before you say that....

WHY would you want to do that??? To heavy and not enough power...that car is going to SUCK! They should have done a SBC instead. A friend of mine did that w/ a 3spd auto and that car was CRAZY FAST!

I guess you missed this part:

"They used another 928 block for their 1100hp project car."

Makes you wonder which shop in Texas this is at..... Where is that former Devek car being produced?

We regularly race the Vega against a 240z with a 400ci SBC and a powerglide it was a very cheap car to build (comparatively) and runs in the high 9's.

and add this....

also, probaly the coolest stuff that i saw at Sema must have been the laser rendering and plastics "printing" . A guy had a hand held laser in one demo and scanned a tool...the tool was rendered in full 3d detail...then a mock up mad out of plastic.

Is it really that much bigger?

Maybe you could machine off the bellhousing part and just stick on an adapter plate that would accept the torque tube, then leave all the 928 clutch bits on the front alone. A custom shifter linkage would required, maybe a custom length torque tube too, but not necessarily. It seems the TR-6060 is the same dimensions, is a 6-speed, supports 600lb.ft of torque safely and costs ~$2,800 new.

The Z that the motor is going into looks like the spittin' image of my old Z... It will be interesting to follow this one.

That is the T56 that hooks directly to a motor. The T56 from a vette looks different IIRC.

Looks like very small differences:

And it appears that the towering bellhousing interface can be unbolted from the case too...

kinda nostalgic... I put a built 289 into a pinto when I was a kid/my 30's. haven't grown up much since then, but the car was insane/looked totally stock on the outside. used to street race it back in the 80's when it wasn't such a menace to society to have fun w/a few friends on a deserted dead end road.

the SBC vegas and SBC 240'z were pretty common and wicked quick too. so were some SBC 911's they called porchevs.

Now all they need to do is swap the body for a 928 body and the car will be perfect
