I don't understand who were the cheapstakes Alan was reffering to.

As a matter of fact only GlenL questioned the price on Jim's CD's , and he did it more from a historical perspective. I very much doubt it's fair to call him a cheapstake just because he doesn't think it's right to pay 70$ for something that initally costed 8$ and then got expanded with info little by little with some work but also with some help from this comunity.

What seems weird is that, as a prospective buyer, I have a hard time getting the info on what Jim's CD's offer over the free stuff that can be downloaded from the UK site. (I'm talking about actual info, not the search capacity of the documents).

This is a free World and a free country.
I for one am always looking for the best deal for my customer.
It is your choice as to what you buy and good luck to you.
I beleive the best deal in CD's is the Jim Morehouse set of 5 CD's - FIVE - not two.
Because they are the best out their I decided to sell them. Sold about 50 sets in the last 12 months.

As I said I hope the Amazon CD is as good as we all hope it is.
However the WSM is only one small piece of the jigsaw puzzle. The other 4 CD's in the JM set hold the rest of the information.

I can confirm that the WSM available for free is just 334Mb. That's a CDonly half full.

But seriously, a good detailed description of what's inside those 5 CD's would help the sales.

I have the WSM in fiche, hard copy, CD and via UK site. Only occasionally is it useful, exception being the wiring diagrams which are invaluable.

I use the PET, the wiring diagrams from the WSM, and the "other" info on the CD's.

Trust me, the most important "WSM" documents are the "other" documents that have been collected onto CD's. These are gold. Essentially the year by year WSM supplements that explain what changed. Like for 85, when the 32 V hit the US shores, one document has over 100 pages describing in excruciating detai to the dealer's service managerl, in layman's terms, what;'s new about the car.

Like in 86, they describe how the tensioner arm is updated from 85, with a different center line to effect uniform pressure without twist onto the timing belt.

This has all been covered on this site and others ad infinitum. Newbies should use search function.

1. Fac Workshop Manual w PET6 parts program, complete, all years. PET6 is
standalone and must be installed on your computer from the cd to work. It
also requires 1280x1024 screen res). The PET6 program can a bit 'flaky' to install and
it seems that about 5% or so have problems getting it to run on their machine.
Usually just doing a re-install will solve the problem.

2. There is a pdf version of the PET program that can be run
off a cd or installed on your computer that doesn't require you to change screen
resolution and contains the same info. Since its in pdf format, there are no issues
with running it. The PET6 and pdf versions cover ALL Porsche models and can
also be useful in determinging if a part from another model will fit your car.

All my information is gotten from the CD's, including embedded PET and wiring diagrams.

And, the CD PET is for the 944 and 911 as well, which helps tremedously on other cars.

Its hard to believe people would even question their utility. Its orders of magnitude easier to be an owner with that info.

I LOVE it!

And I couldn't agree more...

For all the WHINERS out there, Jim's CD's are easily worth $70.

Landseer, if you manage to use the search function on this forum and come up with an earlier post that contains the detailed list just posted by Roger above, maybe your comment would be anything else but bashing...

Thank you Roger for posting the info. If the Amazon stuff doesn't turn out to be a genuine, complete Porsche release I'll buy one set of Jim's CD's.

You don't get it. I'm sure it's all been covered, but in order to dig it out you'd have to find it bit by bit, among countless useless posts like the one we're making right now.

Or, you can simply ask the guy who sells it, and who happens to be present here.

Always gettting as much information as fast possible is part of my job, you know?

As a side note, I'm amazed that you can't get past the difference of opinions we had on another topic. Are you really going to hate me for the rest of your life for not agreeing with you on that issue?

Some of you may remember that about 6 years ago I scanned all the WSM and made them into a pdf. I sold them for about $20 incl shipping. I think I cleared about $10 a copy. Shortly after I started selling them, they appeared on ebay - probably still being e-whored. I kept plugging along. Then Jim's CD's came out. A far superior product with a lot of time and effort put into it. I stopped selling mine and let him sell what was clearly a superior product. At $70, it has more information that you can shake a stick at.

I know Jim was working on an update that would include owner's manuals, and other special guides, but then his hard drive had a melt-down and all was lost. If the small pittance helps Jim get back into the swing of things, then it should be worth it to all of us to contribute.

Can you imagine where we'd be without the WSM or many of the other publications? Go back and look at some of the threads from 2002... they are hilarious. People thought the bolts on the water bridge go into the water jacket. People didn't know how to do a timing belt job or set cam timing or a myriad of other 928 tasks.

I honestly believe that the electronic versions of the WSM have helped increase the 928 intelligence in the community. I know I would sit and study various sections of the WSM before tackling a job. There are still many areas I have not read... and maybe never will, but at least I have them available to me. You now have them available to you because of people like Jim. He's not getting rich from it, nor is Roger. But if it puts a little extra coin in their pocket so they can have an upgrade on their car, that's okay with me, because it's people like this that will go out there and continue to improve upon what they already created for the benefit of all of us.

You guy missed the point... it was mostly a devils advocate kind of position - I like a good value too but its not necessarily the same thing as being 'cheap'.

It also has nothing to do with rich or poor but everything to do with being willing to pay for something of real value to you (...so there might eventually be more things offered of real value to you).

Oh and by the way if most 928 owners weren't cheapskates how come there are so many completely trashed, poorly maintained, bastartized 928 out there... most of those probably aren't rennlist members but they are candidates to buy this stuff...

Alan
