I would say Jim's CD's are well worth the money for all that's supposed to be on them but I've not used them personally.

I can assure you nobody is making a killing on the CD's.
It took Jim years to put them all together and buy all the tecnical documents.
You get what you pay for. A lot of people from Rennlist helped him as well.

Do I make a profit on selling them - yes - sorry if that offends you. I am in business after all 8>)

It would be nice if this is a Porsche authorised CD but so little with just the WSM.
That gets you to first base.

Roger provides an invaluable service to the 928 community by saving us on parts and giving excellent technical advice. How many of our projects wouldn't get done if we had to pay Porsche prices for parts? I know for fact my OB would be broke down a lot of the time due to parts. Roger rocks

Here's a story...

Way back before there even was a forum, I had the manual, and parts list, on microfiche. It was hard to read. I heard that some guy had scanned the manual fiche and was selling CDs for $8. I got one. It's legal for me to have as I've got an original and that is my backup. More convenient, too. Later I heard this guy had scanned a paper copy so I asked "how much?" He said $20. I passed. Didn't seem right to profit by selling copyrighted materials. I follow that he's adding things and has been getting people to share their rare materials with him for scanning. Next I hear it's a $40 CD because he has spent so much time on it. You know lots of people who donate time to The Cause, me included. And now it's a $70 set of 2 CDs. Must cost $5 to copy and mail. Even $10 if someone slow is paid to do the work. That leaves $60 profit, or more, for each set. It doesn't seem right to me.

Hi Everyone,

Anything other than a manual issued from Porsche is a bootleg, a copyright violation. Doesn't matter if its from your friend or some guy on Ebay. So all this "my bootleg is better than your bootleg" doesnt matter much to me.

What seems to be the case is that Porsche doesnt care about a bootleg manual(s) of the 928 because the car is out of production. It is not cost effective for Porsche to police these and it could be a possible issue of goodwill with current owners not to.

I have no idea if the CD manual set offered on Amazon is bootleg or approved by Porsche, who knows, and frankly who cares. I just want a copy - just in case I need it.

FYI: I am a newbie at the 928, but not a newbie at other things... I thought it would be of interest for the group to know about the availability of a 928 manual(s) on Amazon at a great price, thus the post.

VTY,
Joe

Heres another story...

Someone puts a lot of effort into buying the original materials, scanning them all, adding evey piece of extra obscure materials he can find, cataloging the details, making the materials searchable, adding more information and formatting CD's for sale. He's a small business, more of a hobby really, it certainly doesn't pay enough to be a full time job... he sticks with it mainly to provide a service to others... he questions wether its worth is = especially given the copyright risks... He decides that since Porsche won't anymore provide even the printed documents that he's providing a useful service to owners who need this information...

He's dissapointed and frustrated when he sees people on ebay selling clearly duplicated copies of his work even cheaper than he can (after all they have no overheads) but what can he do given the copyright situation... he sucks it up and keep going anyway...

He strikes up a deal with an existing 928 Vendor (who is himself taking a bit of a risk) who agrees to sell the CD's for him - to take away some of the logistical challenges of doing it all himself. Of course the price is that the CD's have to make the vendor enough money to make it worthwhile - so the cost roughly doubles...

What happens then .. well a bunch of the cheapskate 928 owners (Oh yeah thats what most are for sure) says its just too expensive - why should we have to pay for this information anyway...

Well cheapskates.. the reason there aren't more products available is that you are cheapskates...

People need to get paid for the work they do or THEY WON'T DO IT.....

Real simple folks - its capitalism - what this country was based on.

If you want someone to do something that will be useful to you - you need to be willing to pay for it... the fewer of you that are in the same boat the more you need to be willing to pay to make it worthwhile for anyone to address your needs...

I am amazed that anyone would question the value - but I am constantly amazed...

So Alan,

Following your logic, if I steal your 928 and then improve the car by fixing it up with a supercharger and new wheels, then someone steals the 928 from me, the "orginal thief".

Then I should get the car back? Just because I put some "effort" into it?

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Errr...I just "won" a cd copy of the WSM on ebay for $12 with free shipping. Should be here Friday or Saturday. I just hope it's useful.

Geting bootleg of bootleg WSM from Amazon seller for $30 vs bootleg WSM and something close to 100 other factory documents from Roger for $70, there really isn't even contest which is better deal. Some people do not see this simply because they do not know how much info is in those other documents. It might seem that WSM is all what is needed to fix these cars but there are many questions which it doesn't answer.

I was ok with what you were saying until this point Alan. I may not be as rich as you but with out us "Cheapskates" more of these 928's would still be out in the fields where they were left to rot. How many times have you taken your car in to Porsche for work on it? I would imagine not many does that make you a cheapskate for not wanting to pay the Porsche going rate?

Alan you know I've always been grateful for all the help you've given me in the past and I think your a great guy but I just gotta call this a load of crap

Joe, not jumping on you, its great to know about the Amazon CD regardless of what it turns out to be.

Try this analogy, Porsche used to sell apples, then stopped and the fruit is falling on the ground. Jim comes along and picks the fruit and bakes some pies. Do you pay him for his pies, or pay someone who steals his pies and sells them cheaper?

Most of the ebay cd's are direct copies of Jim's basic single CD, or a copy of manuals that can be downloaded free from a UK site. Either way its $12 going in a parasites pocket, with no impact any future updates etc.

What I tell people is if you don't think Jim deserves a few bucks for all the time spent scanning etc., download one of the free versions, don't just throw your money away.

*** Manuals I can see Porsche letting slide, use of there name and trademark, eh, not so likely.
