Default Fuel system upgrade

so on my 81 i still have the stock L-jet system but id like to upgrade and make is safer by ditchin the "barb" injectors. so i can source a CIS intake and injectors (hope so), and i was thinking of geting the 928MS billit rails and some AN fittings and line to run between the, what i call regulators at the front of engine(where the main fuel line comes in) and the two return regs on the back of the rails. anyone done this?

im also looking at what i can ditch off this engine, vap canister etc. its just to ugly under there..... thought?

thanks for looking. sorry about the dumb questions.

If you want to convert to CIS you're going to have to ditch your fuel pump and add the dual CIS pumps and accumulator. Then you're going to have to ditch your entire intake, the only part you might be able to re-use is the plenum. Everything else -- airbox, throttle body, runners -- you might be able to reuse the plenum, but that's about it. Oh, and ditch the L-jet electronics and wiring, then you'll have to plumb in an AAV and WUR.

Sounds a bit insane, as the only benefit will be better throttle response. I'm a big fan of CIS but I wouldn't recommend conversion TO CIS from a later system. The barb fittings are really not unsafe, they just need to be checked and replaced before the age of the small sections of hose becomes an issue.

If you ditch the charcoal canister you will have to come up with a safe way to vent the fuel system... that's the main vent. If you think it's ugly, maybe just don't look at it?

Duc, you can indeed ditch the stock rails and injectors. You can actually upgrade to the later style Bosch injectors w/o the barb fittings. They're cheaper and have more plumbing options. Depending your threshold for price pain and wrenching ability, building your own fuel rails and fittings isn't terribly expensive and/or difficult. The website escapes me, but there is a company in the US that actually sells alumium stock pre-drilled for use in fuel rails. You just order whatever lengths you want [i believe up to 6 feet]. Its extruded aluminum stock with a rounded edge [top] and flat edge [bottom, for use in connecting to injectors].
There are also plenty of resources online to grab the necessary AN fittings and steel braided hose suitable for fuel system use. If you go this route, I suggest investing in the hand tool that makes threading the AN fittings on the stock hose a cinch. [you don't want leaks!!]

...this is essentially the route I'm going with my new motor build [with a few small twists]

I too would like to upgrade to the newer style. I think CIS is going backwards correct?

Correct. CIS is essentially mechanical in nature.

Lindsey Racing makes a nice one that may work, not positive but not cheep by any means. I am not sure if the fittings are the same on both the left and right banks. You would obviously need 2 sets. Would definitely call and make sure before buying.

thanks for the info. i have used AN fitting and hose on a few drag and offroad projects so its not new to me. depending whtat 928MS says about the rails, i plan on picking up the LH-jet intake, the rails, and the fittings. i cant remeber the name of the tool you are talking about, but i have one for 6AN fittings. the little box you stick the fitting in then cram the hose it. it so simple, and i dont get wire jamed under my fingers!

Duc,
Their is no "upgrade" injectors available for the L Jet.
  • L Jet injectors are of low 3 ohm
  • Pintle style single hole, multi hole injectors will wet down the intake runners
  • L Jet injectors do not fit CIS runners
  • L Jet injectors are 24lbs and batch fire, delivers lots of fuel
If your after more HP the stock L-Jet system will support up to 400 HP (BEGI assisted)
If your after the bling, look at my avatar fuel rails.
(forgot to mention I'm selling off my whole fuel system soon)

What's unsafe about the barbed injectors?

I'm pushing over 100psi of fuel through mine.

not saying that they will fail (unsafe) i just want to get rid of the rubber between the injectors and the rail.
