viabration damper question
Hi
I broached this question with colin (lizard)when he was over!
The damper on my car (84 euro) is green ... when i removed it it was 'machined' on the inner face. i have checked the axial play of the crankshaft and it was .2mm so i can only assume that either a stone or some debris has got caught up. Alternately the belt cover has been abused by the p.o. so that may have been the cause....who knows. Now the question...
should i re fit the same damper, fit a perfect damper from another engine (green of course) or what do you suggest.
i appreciate that the damper is matched to the crank... but as it has been scored is it still the best bet????
Regards
Geoff

you might look at the lower bearing rollers for damage, they run close to the back of the damper, also consider the tensioner roller, if the pivot bolt bends then this will also change the belt position and the belt will rub the back of the damper.
The best thing is to post a picture of the damage

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I'll bet the TB tensioner arm bolt was installed backward (at least at one point). This would cause what you are describing until either a) the bolt wore down enough to no longer make contact or b) the dampener wore away enough to clear it or c) both.
If the bolt is installed with the head in and the nut exposed, the end of the bolt will contact the dampener and you really wouldn't know it until you hand turn it or crank it over. Then you'd have to remove the whole assembly, put the bolt in the right way and reassemble the whole thing.
This is of course all hypothetical because I wouldn't be careless enough to do that myself. (however, since it would basically be machined all the way around like it was on a lathe, it should still be completely balanced.)
Hypothetically speaking, does it look something like this? :

Erkka has a nice list of damper colors here: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...or-coding.html
Which of course begs the question of whether (to your knowledge) the damper you have is original/the right one for your engine. Your post only caught my eye 'cause when you say you've a green damper, so does the GTS, which is (of course) a completely different reciprocating mass vs. an '84 Euro engine. From the above thread, Porsche clearly went to the trouble of making different dampers for different engines, it'd be interesting to know how different each of the dampers is. (I don't know jack about them, other than I don't understand how they work and therefore fear them.... )
Perhaps yours is 'blue-green'?
