Default Power Steering return hose ? UPDATE!! CHEAP FIX.

Can't figure out how to paste a page from the PET so...in the 1991 model page 140 there is a nice drawing of the hose arrangement. My question in on hose number 18...I cut off the crimped clamp to replace the soft hose into hard hose 29. Apparently this hose is 3/8 on the hard line end and about 1/2 on the clamp side. Anyone have an idea as to what to do here?

The hose in question is the one ( someone else's photo i found.) Its the one with the white lettering next to the distributor.

The hose with white lettering is the high pressure line!

The return line is the disconnected hose immediately in front of white lettered hose.

Are you certain the hose diameter changes?

I did same and cut crimp to replace the rubber section. Took it local hydraulic hose specialists and the short length they supplied me with using old one as reference clamped to the reservoir and hard line and remained bone dry.

It wasn't special hose. I recall diameter was about 0.5inch. It wasn't as snug on hard line as original but I just made sure to use good quality broad clamp.

When I did the refurb on my 1990 S4 I ran into the same problem of two different sizes required. I tried everything to get a 3/8 hose to stretch enough but to no avail. I went back to the shop that refurbed my hose assemblies to see if they could help. Unfortunately they did not have any pre-molded hose that went from 3/8" to 1/2". I ended up buying a complete new line from Roger at 928sRus.

#18 is the return line, if that's what you meant then Stratford is correct, it is the other hose. I replaced the segment below the reservoir with 7/16" fuel hose, fit tubing and reservoir and seems to be doing fine. Send a PM if you need some, I had to buy a small spool.

Hose #18 is not technically a high pressure line because it is on the return side of the point of use for the fluid power (the steering rack.) While I am sure there is still some pressure at this point in the circuit it is relatively low since the connection between #18 and #29 is a simple crimped hose clamp, not a hydraulic ferrule or banjo bolt. The diameter of the piping does increase from the outlet of #18 to the inlet of #29. I suspect the increase is designed to reduce fluid velocity, allowing more dwell time for the fluid in #29, which is called a radiator in the PET. This reduced velocity would allow more time for the fluid to give up heat via the radiator before going back to the reservoir.

As far as a fix, unless you can find a piece of the correct type hose with a molded change in diameter I think you will have to spring for a new line from one of the Big Three, or fab up a reducing adapter of some sort. YMMV.

I think 928Int'l has rebuilt to better than OEM hoses available. Might be a whole lot easier to R/R.

Okay...I found a hydraulic hose shop near by and purchased a 3/8" to 1/2 all METAL 90 degree adapter...This allowed me to replace the soft hose section without the $195.00 cost. Total cost of one short 3/8" hose, one short 1/2" hose, 4 clamps and adapters....$12.00 ! Been running it for a couple days and all is well.

I finally have NO PS leaks at all. !!

I did something similar on my 83 S to get around the diameter change - a metal right angle piece just under the tank. Make it much more maintainable IMHO.

Dean thats an interesting fix, But would add, you need to turn that plug wire in the furthest plug to the side ( the one thats just about rubbing on the reservoir) The bend isnt good for the inside of the wire nor is rubbing on the reservoir as its not part of the engine
