Default Converting central electric panel from Euro to ATC fuses?

Can it be done, and how practical might it be to convert a Euro fuse 928 to a ATC CE panel? Between 1984 and 1985 I think the switch happened.

This reminds me of something a Porsche mechanic once told me:

"Go ahead and try it. Then bring me the pieces..."

Older saying, if you don't try, you never really know.

Also I am not convinced the Euro style fuses have any real issues that ATC solves.

OTOH I remember some thread talking about the CE panel being made of replaceable modules, so maybe the Euro fuse parts could be replaced with ATC parts.

********** I've seen the ATC / Euro fuse adapters, pointless to my thinking, the weak link of the Euro fuse holders low pressure contacts stays the same.

if some one had some skill, maybe you could find a euro fuse box (my case an 81) and find some kind of aftermarket spade blocks that you could adapt to it maybe?

I have a late 944 fuse box laying around you can use for R & D.

Not between early & late panels.

Could you adapt a late model ATC equpped fuse/relay panel to work in an early car? - of course... is it a lot of work? - yes a heck of a lot.

is it cheap? - No! far from it - terminals for the late relays are dollars each and you need a lot - plan on several hundred dollars for parts alone...

would I do it - NO!

I agree with Alan on this -- possible, yes -- sane, no. Even in the context of the way 928 owners define sane. If you do the cleanup per my writeup then use glass fuses you'll be fine. I couldn't source a full set of glass fuses when I did mine and used a few original ceramic. Since then I have had a couple of issues but only with the ceramic fuses and when I spin them in place they behave again.

Ducman: Just to fill you in (a little), Alan is the kind of electric guy that is installing an aux gel battery as a backup, mind you, to the main. He has also added some in-line fusing where he felt Porsche was lacking. If he says it is a lot of trouble and he wouldn't bother, I wouldn't either.

Ah, so its just a matter of time before someone does it.

When you say glass fuses do you mean the little flat ended cylinders like Radio Shack sells, or something with a pointy end like the Euro fuses have?

** Just to repeat, I don't see any real problem with using the Euro fuses, and a potential nightmare in troubleshooting if a newer panel replaced an older model.

Pointy ends... I found them at BugFormance.

I think that the different connectors at the bottom of the later panel have smaller terminals -- so you would have to disassemble every harness connector and re-make the end. You would also have to convert the main power feeds from oversize spade terminals to ring terminals to attach to the top of the panel. It is 100% doable, but I could probably pull the whole panel out and refresh all of the connections and fuse holders (4 hrs) about 20 times in the time it would take you to do it... and so far my CE panel has been perfectly healthy for ~5 years. So basically 100 years before you actually save any time...

Are the euro fuses different? Do they work in place of these junk plastic ones?

I can not stand the old Euro fuses, the yearly cleaning, the holders would get to where they would lose "Grip", look fine and not conduct current.

I have burnt my fingers many times from rolling fuses.
