Default Keeping Alive

How difficult are these to keep alive? Near me I foudn a 928, and I'm going to go look at it within the next few days. The guy told me a new clutch has been installed, but needs bled out, and the car has a fuel leak, but is an easy fix. Says it drives real good and he hasn't had much trouble with it. He's selling it for $3500 for a fast sell.

Also, what is everything I should take a look at?

Find out what year it is first. If you are serious about buying it, have it professionally checked out by someone familiar with 928s. 928s require maintenance. It's easy to buy one for what that guy is asking, and then dump another $5k into it getting it up to speed. Take my 84 for instance. I bought it for $2k. I'm into it for another $6000 so far and it still needs work.

Hi Jakkq, First, Welcome to board.
I would suggest that if you need more info on what to look for you would be well advised to first read the FAQ at the top of this page, it will detail all of the known trouble spots and there is also a list of things to look for.
This much easier to do than having other members try to retype this info as there will be more than a few points that wont get mentioned.
Also if you can take pictures of the car and post them people with a good eye can spot problems and advise you from there.
Let us know what you find, good luck on your search

DOH!!! TOO SLOW!!! +928 on what Mr. Merlin said.....

Read the FAQ post first. Before seriously considering a 928, take it to a specialized 928 tech for a PPI. Model year and options are important factors. Body, interior, engine, and drive train. Painting a 928 is not cheap, so a good body is very important unless you don't care how it looks. Interior parts are a killer if it had been neglected. Carpet isn't too expensive, but dash and seat repair will cost you. The engine needs to have records, or it could be pricey too. At the very least, it will need a new timing belt, water pump, tensioner rebuild(or PKsn'r), and FUEL LINES. Being a five speed with a new clutch is a large bonus. Make sure there are records of the new parts. It generally takes somewhere around $10000 to make a $3500 928 worth about $7500.... Some are good deals though, so posting photos here with any more information you can find will help.

It's an 82'. I'm going down Saturday morning to take a look at it. It's about 2 hours away.

http://sd.craigslist.org/cto/1434031286.html

I called the guy for the information. It's located in Madison, South Dakota.
How would I be able to locate a 928 inspector from around here?

Those are 928 seats with what looks like a reupholstery job...

I called the guy just for more info.

It's a non sunroof car. He's owned it for a couple years. Says he doesn't drive it enough to keep it.

Discrepancies -

Fuel leak under plenum
Clutch need bleeding. Says PO installed new clutch.
Right rear quarter has a crack where the paint is letting loose from the steel.

Says he has matched PPG paint and clearcoat that goes with the car.

He also said there is a laundry list of new parts that he has installed.
Including WP/TB and all rollers within 2000 miles.

Looks like a good deal to me.

You need someone that knows the 928 well to look the car over, but worst case its a fairly good looking 5 spd 928 with a $3500 asking price. Book price means nothing, neither does asking price.

The "yes/no" depends more on you than the car. Does it grab you and do you really really want it? What sort of mechanical skills do you have/ want to have?

If the car rings your bell, and the expert you have look at it doesn't raise too many red flags, make the guy a cash offer, and start low, but serious.

Don't drive the car with a fuel leak.

Yes, it hopefully goes without saying, but 20+ year old fuel hoses are brittle and cracked, and burning 928's to the ground happens enough in our small community, let alone the 928's at large in the wild.

If you're thinking about a 928, make sure this model year, engine etc. are the ones you want before you buy. Lots of variations of the 928 - each different year has key distinguishing features and there's a huge difference between all the following 78-79, 80-82 4.5L, 80-83 Euro 4.7L, 83-84, 84-85 Euro 4.7L, 85-86 32V, 86.5, 87-89, 90-91, 93-95, as well of course automatic versus 5-speed manual.

If it all checks out, a 5speed car with no sunroof is worth this price. The devil is in the details though...

I believe that car has the competition package becasue of the early sport seats, no side molding, and the S spoilers. The car should also have LSD. It might be a nice car with some minor work.

Would it be good to pull it back, or throw it on a trailer? I don't know how bad the fuel leak is, but ****. Maybe I should call him tomorrow and have him fix that before I come get it. I'm going down Saturday morning so it should be enough time? He said it would be an easy fix, and wondered himself why he hadn't just fixed it already.

Being able to shift this car is important.

You need to see if it takes and holds each gear on acceleration and deceleration.

If not, your talking about a major price deduction. Major.

I've turned into a hardass on this, but its a non-runner otherwise and your looking at sub $2K.

The Competition Package is no guarantee that it has LSD. I have an 81 Comp Pkg that doesn't have it The seats do look like Sport seats (very comfortable). Like has been said before, change the fuel and vacuum lines right away. Chances are good the coolant lines are ready to go too. They were on my 81. Plan on changing the lower ball joints to the steel version too. If you like doing your own work it looks like a great deal, if not....well get yout wallet ready for a shock. Good luck.
