Default 1986 928s trans. slipping

I just purchased my first 928, it has a few problems but not bad over all. The first issue I am starting with is the transmission slipping. The owner I purchased this from said it slipped while cold but did fine when warmed up, I haven't tested this yet. Was told the filter(s) may be clogged up and a simple change of fluids and such should fix it. Has anyone had an issue like this. Also the car seems to work fine in reverse. Thanks

Could be as simple as low fluid level. Check to make sure there is fluid in the tank. If not add fluid run it through the gears and check again.

The car has to be running when checking the fluid. Where are you located and what is the last four digits of your VIN?

Welcome on board.

odds Are the trans is toast......in 16 years of talking with 928 owners when the trans is not Happy it is serious ...positive thinking is a nice thing but sometimes the reason someone sells a car is BECAUSE it needs work

Mine started to slip pretty bad 2 weeks ago, and finally got to look at it this weekend. It was almost a 1/2 gallon low. I knew I had a leak, but didn't know how bad it was. Will need to change the front converter seal. No wonder it was slipping.

Before you go buy a trans, do a search on the proper way to change the fluid/filter and do that. It might last you several more years.

You can ignore James sometimes he can be a real a$$. My advise it to check the simple stuff FIRST than move on from there!

I had a similar issue with a 928 a few years back and tried to sell it that way because it was stored at my parents house over 2 hours away from me. I offered it at a huge discount because of a trans line had broke everyone called BS on it. So i de-listed the car until I fixed the line, filled it up with fluid and sold her for almost 8 grand (had it listed for 4995 on here). You can check the history on rennlist regarding that.. Simple fact is I didn't want to mess with it but glad I did. Maybe your PO is the same?

I would first check your fluid level when hot; after at least 20 good minutes of highway driving. Also check the fluids color. The redder the better. Brown is not good. Next, I would change fluid and filter. MB transmissions are very sensitive to fluid levels. So, do not over fill. Also, I would check your operating hydraulic pressure. My bet is your operating pressure is off.

I have complete 722.3-722.4 transmission manuals. PM me your email address and I will email them to you. In them, there are very explicit diagnostics on "flaring" issues, cause and effect. Michael

Could be toast, but worth a try. I bought the car for less than the interior is worth. Even with a few more thousand invested will still ba a great car. Thanks I'll check the fluid level.

I bought an '85 928S for $3200 because it needed $11 worth of relays. The owner thought it needed a computer, and had just bought a new starter and MAF.

I've got two down at once for repairs.
Internals are Mercedes 722.3 with heavy 040 torque rating.
Fascinating piece of machinery.
I'm told they can be renewed to operate better-than-new.
