Ha! The wheels belong to the guy who found the car for me. Even though, I am thrilled to have it.

Default 1978 Runs

Had a couple of buddies (Chris/RLID Genikz and his brother Joe) up this weekend to our desert place to pull the transaxle and torque tube out of the 944 parts cars and to see if we could get the 1978 Euro running. Well, she ran and sounded great. We only ran her a few runs of 30 seconds or less as the air box was not on the car along with the associated vacuum lines did not make for a situation whereby we were to run the car any harder. Nevertheless, she cranked and ran smoothly. A fire extinguisher was at the ready during starting. Someone was also manning the battery ground.

That is Chris and Joe under the cars respectively.

Joe races a 931 (the 944 trans is going in his race car) and his pretty familiar with CIS. We were also armed with a great primer from Karl Reuter and all of the CIS pages from the WSM. Here is basically what we did to get it started:
  • New FP (6 bar/not OEM)
  • New FF
  • Cleaned check valves and banjo fitting at pump
  • New rubber lines around the tank and fuel pump
  • Dropped the tank and had it flushed locally
  • Flushed lines from fuel dizzy (at the input line) back to the fuel filter
  • Superficially cleaned the WUR (it was recently rebuilt according to Joe).
  • Jumped the fuel pump (relay bad).
  • Checked fluids (oil and coolant was very clean).
  • Ran some Stabil in the system

The car probably has not been started since 1996. The amount of sludge that accumulated int the tank even impressed the guy who did the flushing. The sender had disintegrated into the tank in pieces. We cut off all of the sender up to the cap, cleaned it, grounded it and installed it so we could seal the top of the tank temporarily.

We did have to do a fix on the tank as we tried to remove the purolator in-tank filter (17mm) and actually broke the plastic around the filter at the bottom of the tank. The man who flushed the tank told us to clean and reinsert the filter with a heat gun and some JB Weld and hose clamp it for good measure. I really think the fix is permanent, but I am thinking about another tank as a possibility.

Next in line is the following:
  • Intake refresh
  • Replace sender
  • Install air box and intakes
  • Purchasing a non-mangled gas tank strap (this one was hanging when I got it) and properly secure both the fuel pump and the tank.
  • Checking the various operating pressures per the manual and my CIS fuel gauge set-up.
  • Diagnosing the "clutch pedal on floor" condition.
  • Install gauge cluster and pod
  • Clean grounds and fuse and relay panel
  • Buy a fuel pump relay (or two)
  • Check Belts
  • Check WP

If I secure the above parts before my next trip up there, I am pretty sure I will be able to test drive the car (my first time driving or driving in a 928). I really thought the 1980 would be running before this one, but I cannot wait to drive my first 928 either way - even it is for a blast on the Mojave dry lake beds (OHV only) areas.

Anyway, I am very excited and could easily see a couple of PCA events for this car by Springtime. I took some flip video of the car running, but they are nowhere to be found on the camera. It was pretty dark (6pm) by the time we got her going, but here a few picks of the day.

Grabbing a transaxle and torque tube out of a 944 and getting an Old Bugger running in an afternoon - not too bad for three 944 guys.

Thanks Karl, thanks Chris (Genikz), his Brother Joe, thanks Frank (Legoland951) and thanks RL928 for all of the great archival and real life help.

Awsome deal i'm jellous, my suggestion to you is see if you can find another car for parts. I have seen cars in CA on craigslist for less that $1000 might get most of the parts you need way cheaper that way. I'm rebuilding car #38 right now feel free to msg me if you have any questions.

Paul, thanks for the offer to help.

Ha! The funny thing is I bought this 78 as a parts car for my 1980 project for $225. Now I need a parts car for the former parts car.

I will definitely check out your vids as well as keep my eyes open for good deals. California is only a pain if you live here. It is a great place to visit.

I would buy all of these around $1k examples if I had the means to do so. I definitely have the space. As rough as that green one looks, my 944 friends could not get over the beautiful lines of the 928.
