I actually live in Santa Monica and the car is at our weekend cabin in the desert (Mojave). I have the best of two worlds that way (in my head anyway). You are right about the desert being a bit dust bowlish though. I've got bushes that Cro-Magnon Man probably pissed on. But if you like perfect light, perfect night skies and privacy, and do not have an Aaron Spelling budget, a very spacious lot just two hours from home can be a good thing . You gots to love the desert though.
