Thx Adrian............what I was meaning in my previous post was to replace the 8 CD changer and head with a unit of same/higher capacity better sound quality. Not sure how old the existing system as it came with the car but from a technology standpoint its ancient.

My 1991 S4 had the original Blaupunkt and a 1995-vintage 10-CD changer in the boot when I bought it. The head unit was knackered and the CD changer was the size of a small fridge, so I junked them both and fitted a Pioneer DEH-P6000-UB head unit. I also bypassed the piddly standard amp and wired the stock speakers directly to the head unit.

The head unit is perhaps a little modern looking for the 928 (it's not too "bling" though, I feel) and its main attraction was the reasonable price and the excellent iPod connectivity - you just connect the iPod using the usual USB cable and bung it in the glovebox or wherever, and all the control/browsing is done on the head unit. Sound quality is OK; no doubt it would horrify a bona-fide audiophile but it works well enough for my ill-educated and non-discriminating ears!

I've found a pic:

More photos of the car (including a couple of other interior shots IIRC) HERE.

Earlier in the thread are some pics of removing the trays and side panels as Sean states.
Found this post and have used one of Dwayne's other pictorials. Removal was straightforward. The previous owner looked to have been in there before(a few screws were missing and the H trim was broken on one side, but that made removal of it easier

Both sliders were broken, fiber optics weren't lighting the sliders either.

I went ahead and changed the bulb, since I was in there. A little tricky to remove, but I found if you move the fiber optic line that runs between the bulbs contacts it'll come out easily with needle nose pliers. Then disconnect
the positive or negative bulb wire and it's easy. Putting it back in was tricky, but removing the Phillips screw, you can move the plastic piece that has the two green wires to it.

Fiber optic on the bottom wasn't in the slider at all, it was loose. Trimmed a little bit of the casing to expose the tips of the fiber optic strands and cleaned with alcohol wipes.

Make sure to push the wires all the way into the sliders. Also, Deoxit the connection tabs. Then plugged it back in to make sure all works properly, before reinstalling the plastic case it's in. That is also a little tricky to release the tabs. Easily breakable. Note where the fan switch is relative to the speed number in the display. If it's off, the display won't look right on reassembly. The less you have to go back and do again, the better it is on the old plastic.

Also, cleaned the clear pieces that gets the a fiber optic light for the fan. Light is much better, sliders light, all good!
