OK, I gotta reply.

Really thinking about tracking down some of my previous cars and buying them back.
I have owned my 911 twice. I understand.

The '89 S4 track car - on the other hand - I'll probably quit driving when I start to feel my age. Thought that would be 2 years ago when I turned 70, but it hasn't happened YET!!
I often wonder how long I will enjoy doing DE. my dad was a mechanic and into drag racing, now 80, and a couple years ago he got to where spending 3 days at the track with me as my 'pit crew' was getting to hard on him. the last instructor that rode with me was 74 and could drive his 73RS clone like a bat outa hell. so I am encouraged I will want to do DE for a while. but as I posted before, I would really love to fly. I intend that to be my retirement present, and depending on finances the bike and 911 may become casulaties of achieving that dream. but I intend to keep the 928. but I am hoping to keep my stable and add 'pilot' to my list of activities.

right about the time I realized that one of my other dream cars as a kid (Ferrari Testarossa) was within financial reach. I've never driven one so I can't say for sure if it will meet my expectations of a fun to drive car...but the looks and sound definitely do and it would be a tough decision.....

What if you aspire to own other cars but financials and time don't allow for a additional cars in the stable?
I have pics of Lamborghini Countach on my wall and a 1:14 scale model on my shelf, next to the model of a 928, 911, Honda CB750F, and 57 chev. my first car was a 57 chev. so my model shelf shows my first, my three current, and my dream. from what I have read a Coutach would not be as enjoyable to drive as a 928 or 911 and a money pit to own/maintain. Ahhh.... but a moving work of art. my neighbor has owned a Ferrari 308, 355, and now a 550 marinello. sigh...

I also have a pic of a testarossa, that and the countach used to share space on my wall. but eventually the testarossa pic went into the closet as I added more pics of Porsches to my walls. in my dreams a 430 Scudiera and GT3RS fight for my dream as a track car.

I am taking my Dad to Las Vegas as an 80th birthday present. checked into renting a lambo/ferrari. $1300/day. unless we win big in the casinos.... sigh...

All you need to decide is if the car is special to you or not, and whether or not you can afford it. If the car is special to you, and you can afford it, tell your wife. Ask her why she would want you to sell something that you enjoy.

OTOH, if your wife is just nagging her own private agenda, grab back your *****, and put them on the 928 keychain, where they will be safe. Your car, your *****, your choice.
married 31 yrs. she still just does not understand or accept my car addiction/disease. her thing is the house and I have to compliment her on being frugal and helping me learn to live within my means. her frugality enables me to have a few toys, paid for. a good friend is not as lucky, his wife/daughters spends money faster than he can make it, and he makes a 6 figure income. I have reached the point I do not ask permission and do not beg for forgiveness on my car expenses. I keep telling her the only difference between me and Jay Leno is $$$$$. she took early retirement 5 yrs ago and I am able to keep the bills paid and fund the maintenance on my modest car collection. so that has diminished her tendancy to nag, and note she drives an Audi A8.

I was working on my 911 recently and she came into the garage sniveling about my working on cars in the garage and making a mess. I was threatening to buy a scissor lift. the next day she tells me she was talking to a friend and her husband has a big garage and 3 lifts. that weekend we had dinner with them and he has graciously offered to let me use one of his lifts this winter for my projects on both the 928 and the 911.

and so it goes......

Very timely! I was just considering this very question the other day and pretty much came to the decision that I may be without a 928 someday.

Too many vehicles I would like to own/experience, too little budget.

Like some others, I tend to go through cars and motorcycles regularly and its not a bad thing.

My wife does not understand but we've pretty much worked it out. I don't deal with nagging well at all, so that is strictly verboten, but the budgeting discussions happen from time to time, and its a good thing, otherwise we would be living in a trailer with a collection of sports cars and bikes out in a huge barn.

Right now I would like to get my S4 - 5 speed up to snuff and enjoy it for a few years. I'd also like to add a 32v automatic for commuting and cruising. Ultimately an 86.5 - 5 speed or GT might be a keeper if I could afford to while still adding another fun car and maybe a few motorcycles to the fleet.

I've owned some fun cars and bikes over the years and don't really regret letting any of them go as they've always funded the next purchase. Some of the more interesting cars/bikes I've let go:

'82 Suzuki Katana 1000 - one of the hardest to let go
'70 240z - low vin, good condition - another difficult one to let go
'98 Ducati ST2 - nicely modded and setup

Some I'd like to own and enjoy before I croak or am too feeble to enjoy:
70 - 73 240z (one of these may be a keeper)
Jaguar XKE - 6 cyl coupe - roadster is not realistic in my lifetime I am afraid
Boxster S
BMW Z3/Z4
Hot rod of some sort - semi rat rod, coupe or 4 door, doesn't matter
60's or 70's Caddie, Eldorado Convertible would be especially nice. There are two early 70's Caddies for sale in my town right now, one Eldo convert, one 4 door. Very cheap. I am really trying not to buy the Eldo.
Older Land Rover/Dodge Power Wagon/Ford Bronco
'86 Suzuki GSX-R 1100
Suzuki Gamma or RZ500
Triumph 650/500 or Norton 750 Commando (not 850)
Ducati 750 SS
Etc, etc...

There's a bunch others but I'm already into the fantasy range with the list above...

I've been daily driving a 928 for 10 years now. I have no plans of stopping any time in the near future. Especially now since my current car is at the performance level of today's supercars.

that is a very good point. I'm on a few Volvo lists (yea..there are some fast Volvo's out there)..was on a VW Corrado list years back, and am also on several motorcycle lists. The 928 list (and I only mean the 928 list..the other Porsche models don't have the same enthusiasm) is worlds above any of those other lists technically. We've got so many enthusiasts that are technical experts. Those other lists have one or two experts..and the rest are usually mis-informed..and you can't just search and find your answer easily like you can with the 928 listers..

As long as I have this community and our knowledgeable vendors to facilitate my habit, I will own at least one 928.

Dude...there is absolutely nothing wrong with that statement . You need to get your priorities straight LOL.

After my divorce, one of my search criteria for a new house was at least two car..hoping for three or four or maybe a place with a separate detached garage/shop. I ended up with a 2.5 car garage (room for my GT, track car, and both bikes)..the other cars (daily drivers) can stay outside. The driveway is big enough for 6 cars too..so that is good... My new place also met one other requirement..that no major house projects were immanent so I could spend more time on the cars

Tom, that is too funny. When we bought our current house years ago, I was ecstatic that it had a three car garage. For me it was like buying a three car garage with a house attached. The wife was thrilled, I was thrilled, the kids were, well you get the idea.

Now I'm spoiled and want a large detached garage or barn with a lift - or two. My garage currently will not fit a proper lift, although I could always go for some expensive mods to the garage I guess. Hmm...

And no doubt, Volvo's rock. I sold my 855R a while back, but loved it. Also have had an assortment of 240's and 740's too. Fun cars, built like tanks, very easy to work on (well, at least the older ones).

And oh yeah, I forgot to add that I need a 928 track car bad!

Old boy with the usual S4 mods would do nicely. Although, I am torn between buying/building a 928 track car, or just buying an existing track car like an older MG, 240z, or something newer, but still "cheap."

There's plenty of them out there right now.

And of course I NEED a couple of new dirt bikes.

Jeez, I sound like a spoiled brat...

15 years with my OB behind me and I hope another 15 is ahead of me. Love it more now than when I first got it, love driving it now more than ever before - having sorted out numerous minor issues over the years.

Owned it for 28+ years, promised to my daughter next year on her 25th birthday - we'll see ! It will always stay in the family, that's a given.

I have really enjoyed everyone's posts, this turned out to be a fascinating conversation. My neighbor has some kind of AMG Mercedes, an SL55, I think. Have you noticed in the car magazines, it seems every month they have some new AMG model with 50 more HP than the last one (what are they up to, 600 hp?).

Granted, these are rare, low-production cars and obviously beautifully made, but I wonder, would I enjoy one enough to put out $100 grand for it?

We've owned two Lexuses and I certainly admire what you get for the money with those cars, but let's face it, they're a dime a dozen. And while a Lexus will cruise sublimely at 110 mph, I feel way more comfortable at those speeds in the 928, knowing the steering, suspension, brakes, etc. were truly made for high-speed driving.
