Default OB MPG? 11 MPG on the window sticker

I have checked around the fourm and can't figure out what MPG I should be getting on my '79 OB. The original/actual window sticker says 11 MPG. They didn't do hyway/city back then, just one number was given.

I'm getting about 11 MPG in city driving. Car recently passed emissions testing. Filled the tank from almost empty (but no reserve light on) and it took 18 gallons. Got a quater tank left and did only 142 miles! Granted, I really ride her hard and that is exclusivly city driving (winding roads, lots of shifting, etc.)

Seems from what I have read, MPG got much better each MY. So what is normal for a '79 OB? I saw alot of posts say 15 MPG city on 80's OB's, but why then does my window sticker say 11 MPG?

Car runs awsome, no smoke, soot, etc. However there is some exhaust smell when I pull her into the garage. Not gas, not oil, just old car exhaust smell.

I believe 11MPG is city. 17MPG or less would be highway (of course based on driving habits, you may get more or less). I believe the stickers are based on driving 55 mph or so, but who does that???

'89 S4 GP White/Black
'76 912E Silver/Black sunroof (21 gal tank near 30mpg)

If you're looking for some comparisons, I have a '81 auto. It runs great, and I too drive it almost daily, mostly city, and mostly briskly. Averaged 13 mpg every tank I've checked that didn't involve some highway miles.

My '81 auto is LUCKY to get 13 in mixed mostly "city" type driving...I think I am normally around 11 in that car... My S4 does WAY BETTER, so do the GTS's!

I get about 11 normally, around town with at least 1 ten-mile round trip on the freeway per week. On the open road, I've seen 19.5 leadfooting over hundreds of miles of freeway.

That sounds about right. Last time I checked my 78 it was getting 17 mpg on a mix of city and highway driving.

When I got my '81 it would only get about 11 mph anytime. It passed smog twice, but the 3rd time it did not (was close, but mot quite) Inspection of vacume at distributor showed no vacume on one side. As it turned out when vacume was lost a previous owner had pulled distributor and reset it full advance (maybe retard, cannot remember) Worked on distributor and found the vacum pot was actually good. it had just fallen off distributor mounting and was doing nothin at all, hence the repositioning of distributor. Reattached pot, pulled and reset distributor, plugged vac lines and set timing. Car now had (has) more power and get 16-17 in town, and 22+ on highway. I must add I do not have a heavy foot.

On the drive out from Colorado (I-40) when I bought my car it got something just under 20 m.p.g. I don't bother to check the mileage any more, but my gut feeling is it gets around 11-12.

I think there is a problem if you're getting low mpg like that. I have only really ever known the 32V cars which consistently give approx. 16mpg city / 23mpg highway. Sometimes a little less or a little more. I've measured up to 29mpg on long even drives and as low as 14mpg with frequent warmups and short trips.

I've never seen 20 in my car. Best tank was on the way to SITM last year and I got 18mpg. I drive a mix of highway and in town going to work, and some fun runs on the weekends, and it's always 13-14 max. In fact the last tank was more like 10...but then I'm running open loop and enjoying the new exhaust sound.

time for some taller gears and retuned fueling...

if a 500HP 7.0L corvette can get 24mpg and weigh like 200lbs less than a shark i dont see why you couldnt get similar

^^^^
The engine electronics are about 2 decades newer than ANYTHING in a 928, that makes a SUPER HUGE difference. Not to mention top gear in a Vette is quite all...along the lines of the 2.20 S4's when you look at overall gearing I think...

Henrich, 11 is very average for the early cars... they are just TERRIBLE!
