Repainting my 81

Just wanted to share some pics of my 81 manual in the process of being repainted. I'm deleting the rub strips and I think I'm going to delete the side markers also, not sure yet though. Other than a little more rust than I originally thought, we haven't had too many surprises so far. I'm also sticking with the original color, black metallic. Here are a few pics.

The last one is of Fabio421's 82 turbo that he is having painted.

Yeah, I'm deleting the rub strips. Not much of a fan of them, particularly on the OBs. The holes still need to be welded up though.

The top of my '90 is in about the same condition as yours. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

IF you get the rub strips off without destroying them I can use the drivers door section if you are willing to part with it. Let me know please.

Progress has been a little slow do to me not getting the welding guy over to the shop to weld up the holes from the rub strips. So no primer on the main body yet. The lower corner of my hatch, were the water collects was rather rusted. Instead of dealing with that mess were going to use a spare that I picked up some time ago. The only thing is that it had been drilled for an S4 wing at one time. So those holes need to be welded too. I had asked the seller if it had any holes, he said it was perfect

We did get the hood and the sunroof block sanded and a second coat of primer on both of those. I picked up a rear bumper cover that was in better shape than mine from soupcan928. Got that sanded down and also shot with primer at my last visit.

I'd ditch those side markers. OB's look so slick w/o them.

Did you take the bumper covers down to the plastic?

No, we didn't take the bumper covers all the way down. I think because they weren't in to bad of shape, we didn't need to do that. Although I'll have to let 928tt who is the painter chime in on that.

Well its been a little while but, progress is being made. With an eye on getting to SITM again, the pressure is on to finish the car. After lots of sanding and replacing the passenger door the main body was ready for paint. The drivers fender was still at the welders getting a couple of holes filled, so that will be painted with the bumper covers. Mark is doing a great job and I'm learning a ton about the whole process.

Here are some more pics.

It's looking good Ed. Are you going to be at the shop this weekend? I'm planning on being there to block out my car. Do you think you'll make it to SITM? Time is quickly slipping away.
