Those are serial numbers, the type is above that number for the Motor ID, and precedes it for the trans ID.

Pretty sure that is a mistake, its not a number I've heard of Porsche using.

Best guess is that it is, M28/47, which is the ID for 89 to 91 GT.

Trans ID goes from driver side to passenger side stamped into the bottom of the transmission, roughly between the axles.

It is a GT engine block. Are you getting that number from the "cert" (certificate from Porsche) or are you reading it from the engine block? Both would be nice, but since it's sold now it's rather academic.

Gosh it seems hard to get the accurate info on what appears to be a unique car. Wouldn't it be nice if all the pertinent info were in one place, at one time, in one post. Sigh..........

Those numbers alone will not tell what engine and gearbox are. We need M28/xx 81J00160 and G28/xx 2J10547. Without xx all those numbers tell is J = '88 MY, 00160 = 160th engine and 0547 = 47th gearbox. Both numbers must be checked from engine block and gearbox casing. Anything written in any paper do not help much.

There isn't 12 = LSD in '88 and later MY stamping. yy on G28/xx yy is left off after '87 MY and LSD or no LSD is told in 2J10547. 2 = LSD, if it were 1J10547 it would be non LSD version.

Complete number is very likely G28/12 2J10547 = 47th '88 MY ROW S4 transmission with 40% LSD.

Hey Doc,
Thanks for the help. I would really like to know all I can about the car. It will help me with this momentous decision. This is the second 928 I have owned. The first was a 83 5spd (see pics. of 88 cert. and 83) that I put nitrous on. I regertted that sale the moment I sold it. $14,500.00 cash. I am not sure I wlll be able replace this car in the future. Hummmm eat or 928 hard choice.

Well, curiouser and curiouser. It appears from the cert that you have a later model GT engine (M28/47) in an early 88 S4. Now, if the same 81J00160 appears on the actual block, that will be something. And, you have an LSD trans which I'm going to guess is a GT type as well. An oddity, to be sure.

Wrong and wrong unless block stamping is M28/47 81J00160 and gearbox stamping G28/55 2J10547. I'm willing to bet quite a lot this is not the case.

Engine block has M28/47 something in it but rest of the stamping is not 81J00160. Gearbox is likely original and have stamping G28/12 2J10547.

This nonsense has been going on for pages in several threads. Simple answer is all it takes. What exactly is stamped on engine and gearbox?

Wouldn't posting a picture taken of the engine block stamping and transaxle stamping solve a lot of the guessing?

Just a thought.

Uh, it's not curiouser and curiouser? Isn't that what I said in the third sentence of my post? If THAT SN number is on the crankcase then it's very interesting. Please reread my post, and pay particular attention to the third sentence. It may be simply a restatement of what you are saying. I still say it's pretty curious.

Who cares..it's a 88S4..has a 5sp...has a GT engine...DOESN'T HAVE A SUNROOF....has a supercharger....and looks to be in decent condition..... Get a PPI ...incl compression test... and have one hell of a ride...

BTW..if it has the original Euro transaxle..wouldn't that be a 2.64 anyway.?...not that undesirable in my mind
