Looking for a 'Great Mechanic'

Marc,
If you are willing to bring/have the car brought to southeast PA in the USA, Earl Gillstrom is one of the passionate guys who has rebuilt MANY 928's as his retirement "job". He would pull the engine, and go through it completely. He restored his own '91 928 GT to showroom appearance and Performance (after it had been totaled 3 times by insurance companies/previous owners). He does work for knowledgable and passionate 928 owners from New England to Tennessee to Michigan here in the USA. Contact him if you want - e-mail is: captearlg@gmail.com
I have him do ALL the work on my 928s that I don't do myself ('94 GTS and '89 S4).

Sometime this week I'll drop by Marc's and have a quick look at it. Then he can decide what to do. I wouldn't jsut take the mechanic's word for what is wrong with this S4.....need to do a good diagnostic and go from there.

Concur. It wouldn't be the first time a mech told the customer the whole thing needs to come apart. You'll need to check for water in oil, oil in water, seeping, do a comp test, etc.

Thanks Gary for the offer....I'll come back after Imre and I look at it. Imre may just turn out to be my 'Earl' and he just lives 45min away. As for Doc I respect what ur saying ...I'm just getting my feet wet with this site which I'm finding to be very informitive and helpful.

The mechanic identified he needed an intake refresh and convinced him that the best way to do it properly was to pull the heads while it was off, as the car has done 280k km's (170k miles).
So far he's been up for new head gaskets, new (GT!) cams (originals were pitted - common on GT cams), all intake sensors/gaskets etc, for a car that had no real issues other than needing an intake refresh. Last I heard the workshop had spent a couple of weeks trying to find a cam (guessing left-side exhaust!).
Of course, a high miles '89 GT here is worth around $US 25-30k, as there aren't many in Australia and importing them is tricky. But he's still going to spend 60%+ of the purchase price adding not much, if any, value to the car.

Three out of 4 ain't bad- I have purchased parts and had great service from 928Intl, 928 Specialists, and 928sRus. No firsthand experience with AutoAtlanta.com. I have also purchased several items from 928 Motorsports and Motorsports SLC and highly recommend them too.
