I believe the S4 has head bolts vs studs on the early 32V and the heads are easier to remove without pulling the engine.

Imre the magician has actually removed early 32V heads with the motor in place!

Sounds very tempting. Let me come over and have a look first. we need to be 100% sure the head gaskets are gone. After all, you could be luckier than you think. 30 hrs is only fo rhte HG, the rest of the whiel you at it stuff can double that, but I'n not concerned about that or the time it takes. More worried about working on someone else's car.

S4 has bolts. My S4 motor rebuild included an intake refresh. I did almost all of it myself - just farmed out the head machine work.

If you're the first guy going in after 20 years and you do it all yourself, and you're as **** (eerrr enthusiastic?) as I am, figure 120hrs from begin to drive and $5000ish, maybe more. There's more than enough help on the list to get it done.

If any issues with the car are outside of your comfort level to wrench on yourself and you want to find a professional mechanic in your area (and perhaps warranty the work), perhaps contact John Veninger. He is not in Canada (Hewitt, NJ), but as the 928 technical advisor for PCA's Panorama magazine -he may be able to point you in the right direction to a respected 928 mechanic.
His public email is john928@yahoo.com

And, I just found out he is here on RL...

Marc,
There's a guy up here in Newmarket. I haven't used him personally, but he's had good reviews.
Name is Franz @ Auto Select 905-853-0442.
There's also Courtney @ Autowerks in Vaughan. Langstaff / 400 area.
He really knows what he's doind and they have the alignment unit to work on our cars too.

I've read alot of threads stared by Imre...this guy Know the 928 and then some ..I'm going to look forward to his opinion. But if he doesnt want to take on the project I'd like to go into the mechanics shop with a 'liitle' knowledge.

So if you could help
Ok, time for a reality check. Yes, that's about right for the parts that you've listed. But that only the parts you've listed. Now you get it apart, and it needs all the intake and rubber vac. It also needs the connectors for the crank pos, knock, temp II, etc.

Labor. You are going to DIY? Cause it sounds like you want someone to come over and do it for you. And I gotta say, if you can find someone to wrench it for free, go for it. Let's say, you have to pay someone. I'm betting you've got at least 80 hours of skilled labor there not in machine shop charges. So, $40/hr for 80 hours sounds like $3k-ish in labor. Then you've got your machining charges. Clean and prep the heads for surfacing, cause sure as **** one or both of them are warped. Then put in new valve seals, and a quick valve job, that's about $4-500 for machine labor. Now you've got to get the TT out and back in, no 10 min job there. So like I said you can spend another $7000 easy on this car and just get it back together. So, now you've got a $14k S4 that is worth maybe $10k.

What's wrong with this picture?

Look at all the recent threads on here of guys buying a project and now having to sell it because they couldn't get to it, or don't have the $$$ or don't want to bother, or whatever. I'll revive this thread and congratulate you the minute the head are off, and you're digging in and fixing things. Look at the support I gave Shark week on his GTS engine rebuilt. He's not on here yakking about it, he's out in the shop getting **** done. By the time you suck all the drama out of this, he'll have his car back together and driving.
