Those with any history of heart or respiratory distress should avoid getting estimates at the dealership.

I think the dealer price for a water pump is something like $1k?

What exactly does your paperwork say, brand of pump, etc.?

$578 is more in line with the price of a Porsche rebuild pump.
$830 is the price of a new one.

$578 makes it unlikely a new Porsche pump, way too much to pay for a non Porsche pump, so likely thats what it is.

I would take plenty of pictures to document their work as the old pump comes off, check out all aspects of the rest of the work, then decide what to do. I don't think I would let them or a dealer touch the car, no future in either choice.

Looking at the Porsche list price $578 is in between rebuilt and new.

Most larger independant "porsche" repair shops buy their parts from the same people that Roger , Dave, Mark A. and the other retailers do (they may not get as good a price due to low volumn ) . Those same shops also may use the dealers and get about 20% of of list price. Repair shops KNOW what Porsche charges retail and by undercutting it some give the customer a "deal". Repair shows often expect to make as much parts markup on a job as there is labor. If they quote a job based on Porsche parts prices then with two or three phone calls find similar parts for hundreds less you can probably figure out what often happens......Very small shops sometimes actually will just call the dealer for all their parts to save them time....besides the customer is paying for it

The repair shop came through and replaced everything free of charge. It was a bearing failure, under 3000 miles post installation. I was pleased that they replaced the part.
