So..... you're keeping the car and doing the resto work in a storage unit.

So that the wife won't find out?

it will certainly tell you that there is SOMETHING in there. I buttoned my car up one day after having the intake removed and stuff and just out of chance decided to turn it over by hand with the wrench on the crank bolt. At TDC the engine stopped...would not budge. A solid as a hammer hitting concrete, it stopped. My heart sank at what happend but in the same breathe i was thankful i didnt turn the key!
Turns out a small washer 1/16 inch think or so dropped in the intake of the cylinder whose valves were open . It got past my rags (dont use those aymore).
The washer dropped in and due to the "natural" incline of the cylinder dropped to the lowest point....right in that "squish" band....where there is NOT 1/16 clearance at TDC.

I was SO...SO..Sooooo lucky that day.
Even luckier was the fact that the washer wasnt aluminum and was fished out of the spark plug hole by shear chance using a small magnet, straw and fishing line.

The click heard when washer met magent was one of the most wonderful things i have heard!! I still have the washer and retreval tool in my box-o'stuff!

IMHO..Always turn a motor over by hand after having the intakes off or doing work where the timing may have been altered..

Ummm... in a word, No. I tried to tell her (instead of asking) that I was going to purchase the car and, well.... that didn't go over too well. THe words, divorce, b!tch, and few other choice words came to mind.

So I decided to take matters into my own hand and hide it from her. So far so good.

Thanks for all the kind words from everyone else. I ordered my parts from Jeannine yesterday... (oh crap that reminds me - need to add one more thing) hoping I'll be able to get things somewhat back together next week.

Last night, I got my tools in order, removed the driver side cam cover, removed the flappy and the bearings and cleaned up the parts that are going to the powder coaters today - turns out there's a shop about a mile away.

Pics below (again, sorry for the crappy cell phone pics - I thought i had my camera, but I guess I left it in Michigan.)

I took a picture of the old head gasket. It looks almost new. The field media (paper?) has almost zero delamination. I feel good about just replacing the one head gasket.

The pebble did break up the carbon on the piston a bit, but other than that there are no signs of any damage. I can't get a decent pic with my cell phone, but I'll try tonight. The cylinder wall is perfect. I need to re-inspect the valves on cyl 4 to make sure they still seal 100%, but first look showed them to be okay.

Maybe you can get the temp. car wrap stuff and wrap this into a red 928.
She might not notice the different wheels and engine noises.

PS. Think most storage places have a specific clause that it is verboten to live in the storage units.

Wow, aren't you glad the cylinder walls aren't metal! That magnet tricked would never have worked...

Intake parts are now at the powder coaters. Tonight's project will be to clean the mating surfaces of the block and head.

Andrew, I think our cars are assembly line brothers. I'll have to check, but my 87 is (I think) #0082.
