Update:

The head is on and the cames are in. Still need to set cam timing.

I had a potentially major or minor setback last night.

I had lost one of the crush washers for the oil feed tube for the chain tensioner. I searched hi and lo and could not find it or a replacement here in Athens, OH except for a brass washer. It was a bit oversized but I thought it would fit the bill.

Well upon installation, 'ol butterfingers here dropped it and it went down the oil return passage. I think it mught be jammed up in the passage, but I don't have a grabby tool, and of course magnets don't work.

If I can't retrieve/feel it, I'm thinking it will be sitting in the bottom of the sump and will not cause any harm. Wuddya think?

OK, here are the pics:

Andrew,

I feel your pain. When I was replacing the tensioner pad my heart was racing. I'm sure its sitting in the pan but without it being magnetic it probably isn't safe to run it that way. I would pull the pan to be on the safe side. I'm sure the pan gasket is past due like all 928's any how. Good luck with it.

Nice job!

Regarding the washer, I think you're screwed if it gets pushed back up by the oil coming of the crank.

So how did you install the cams - without Porsche special tool xxxx?

Malcolm had the same issue:

Ugh, I really hate those washers on the tensioner oil tube. The only safe way to be sure is to pull the oil pan

You can easily remove/re-install the cams by just turning each screw one turn at a time. It sounds tedious but it really isn't at all. I just did it a couple of weeks back on my wife's 968.

Actually, the pan gasket isn't that bad on this motor. I probably would have pulled the motor if I was going to go that far. I was really hoping to not pull the pan... Seeking other opinions.

I don't think it could get pushed back up, but I understand your concern.

It's really not needed. You just set them in their cradles with the two pointers on the cams pointing up. This gets you pretty close. My next step is to replace the end caps and use the PorKen 32Vr to set the timing spot on.

Those washers suck!

I will try and retrieve it with the grabber tool, but if I don't find it, it stays in the pan. I might try and flush some brake clean down there to get it to go into the pan, but after that, I'm done.

Cool, good to know, thanks.

IIRC Malcolm later found his washer outside the engine

I tried to retrieve the washer, but as far as I can tell it's in the pan/sump. I'm not worried about it getting swept up, so it's going to stay there.

I installed the end cradles - where the seals go. Installed the cam seal and the caps. Man, that cam seal is a real bitch without the driver tool.

Went to install the cam backing plate with the hall sensor, and found the connector was toast, but most of the plastic was still int he harness. New hall sensor is about $250.

So I broke out the epoxy last night and spent a few 5-minute sessions mthodically gluing the connector back together. Crossing my fingers that it will work.

Tonight, I will hopefully get the hall sensor installed and the cam timed. Cam covers are also ready to go in.

I got my hall sensor from roger and it was much cheaper than that.

Andrew..........I did lose one of those washers but unlike you did not know where it went. I assumed it was in the engine but after searching, posting and searching more I gave up, ordered a new one and installed the oil feed pipe only to find the washer stuck between the metal fuel line and the wiring on the passenger fender. I have a spare now

That hall sensor is very expensive..................got mine from Roger; 1/2 as much IIRC.

Even still... $125 is a lot of money. It appeared the only thing wrong with it was the connector. We'll see if the epoxy does the trick.

I suppose I could also look for a new connector... Hmmmmm. Where's that site with all those Bosch connectors?
