Default Won't idle when cold

But it idles fine when warm. Is this an ICV? Or warm up regulator? 87 S4

Is this the car that wouldn't start?

I'd go over the basics first; air filter, ignition components, ensure the TPS is working, good fuel, all vacuum hoses and connections are good and tight.

when was the MAF inspected last?

Anything idle related could be the ISV, but everything will need going through and checking.

Does it start easily? If it doesn't want to start or idle when cold, it may be the temp II sensor. I think they're pretty cheap and very easy to replace.

Starts up instantly. But I have to play with the throttle to keep it idling while it is warming up. When it's warm, it's fine....
So I guess there is a list of things to go over?

Lots of things to check, but if it starts right up cold, it's probably not the temp II sensor

Yes:
intake gaskets
new vacuum hoses
ISV
filters
Injector o-rings
plugs
wires
passenger cap

and anything else we find when we get in there...

I've got the same exact issue. Going to change the vacuum hoses and plenum/intake couplers...O2 sensor as well, in a couple of weeks. What's an ISV and a passenger cap? Sounds like they're begging to be changed out too...

Passenger cap means passenger side ignition cap. We changed BB's driver side with a good one but only had 1 for some reason.
ISV is Idle Stabalizer Valve. One of the main issues with idle problems. A stupid part that breaks easily and cost $130+

Default Morning cocktail for the ISV

+1...same for me. Cold morning startup stumble. I search and found most threads pointing to ISV. I've seen the brake cleaner/WD40/Kroil/PB Blaster? 'trick' which essentially cleans a gunked up ISV.

Worthwhile to check as others stated such a TempII, vaccum, coil, plug & coil wires. I've used brake cleaner and it does shoot out a lot of gunk out the exhaust for a bit. See this morning's Rx and result.

I sprayed PB Blaster for a good 5 seconds followed by CRC Brake Kleener before starting (see pics). Let is sit for 10 minutes then started up. Previous to this, I have had stumbling idle, running very rich etc. But after a few minutes the ISV hangover is over and it's back to normal. I feared things like vaccum leak, LH, TempII etc but knowing my ISV is original, it's very likely to be gunked up.

Today no stumble after this cocktail, low rpm's and rich smelling, just idle around 1000-1100 and lots of smoke from the cocktail of PBBlaster and brake cleaner which cleared up after 5 minutes or less.

Good luck!

BB - No warmup regulator in S4's. All brain controlled.

...and resides under the intake manifold, requiring several hours to get to it before it can be replaced.

What are you guys feelings on the Autozone ISV? I hear it is a Bosch part labeled as a Duralast, Duralast part. So I'm sure it has a lifetime warranty on it, right? And I hear it cost around $130ish? Anyone have any experience?
I wonder if Roger might chime it....

Whole thread about it, but if you buy the autozone and open the box in the store and it for any reason isn't the exact bosch part you want, give it back.

So when replacing my vacuum hoses...will my intake need to come off...thus exposing the dreaded ISV?
