Default 928 Track Car Project Gets Soda Blasted... pics

Only a few more weeks until the 928 DE project goes for paint. In the meantime, I trailered it to Chesapeake Blasting Service in Maryland for a healthy dose of baking soda on the interior sheet metal and engine bay. This isn’t going to make it much faster, but I'm a big fan of painted interiors on cars with the interior stripped out, so I brought it down to the bare metal. After I removed all the tar paper using the techniques outlined in the 'Official Weight Loss Thread', the baking soda removes everything except the seam sealer. Porsche wasn’t playing around when they rust proofed these cars… 30 years later and not a spot of rust. After the blasting you can see every spot weld on the car. Also, the soda won’t cut through the undercoating that’s applied to the bottom of the chassis and wheel wells, you need the grinding wheel for that. In the next week I'll be fabbing up the new trunk to accommodate the fuel cell... more to follow.

I'm not a big fan of the yellow. I'm going with Polar Silver inside and out despite my daughter insisting on green.

Did you think about sand blasting underneath it to remove the undercoating?
How much did they charge to do the soda blasting? The place I was going to do mine was going to charge around 1100 to do the entire car.

Yes, I did think about sand for the undercoating but at $160 per blast hour for the soda I elected to just stick to the areas that are cumbersome to hit with a wire wheel. On areas that are more easily accessible with a grinder, it's a lot cheaper to take it down to metal yourself. On areas that are not, nothing beats compressed air. Also, I wasn’t as concerned with brining the underside to bare metal only because the cost/effort/benefit ratio doesn’t score high for me. I’ll take down the front wheel wells because they’re accessible but that’s about it. With the headlight delete, HVAC/AC delete, interior delete, cut doors, battery box delete, bumper support delete and polycarbonate windows from 928 Motorsports, I’m hoping to have the lightest shark in the neighborhood for the 2010 autox season.

Are you going to weld the seams for strength?

Thought about it but I should have a far amount of rigidity with the 6-point cage.

I find your cage design interesting.

Is there a reason you went with the verticle bar as supposed to a X or slanted bar in the back?

I am also guessing that the side protection bars were made that way for ease of getting in and out?

I inherited the cage, when I picked up this body the cage was already there and I must say that the welds are perfect – much better than my work.
