Default Need leather for "patch"

My 89 driver seat is bad off. Before someone suggests new covers let me say...I can't do it anytime soon. I've been out of work this entire year so $$$ for seats is just not in the cards.

I have read a few threads on the subject. I am going to order the Leatherique kit with crack filler. I know I will need to bond a over sized piece of leather under the cover shown so the tear will have something to hold it all together. Does ANYONE have an OLD seat cover or a unneeded section of leather for the "patch"??? Looks like I need a piece about 4" by about 12" long at least. My plan is to feed this inside the torn area...center it in the bad area then use a bonding agent to glue all this together.

Can anyone spare a piece of leather???

I can help you, does it matter that it's a blue piece? Shoot me your address, I'm headed to the PO later for something else anyway.

You don't need to use leather for the patch. A piece of canvas or old Levis will suffice. Cut it oversize so that there is a minimum overlap (actually underlayment) of one inch beyond the limits of each tear. Place the patch under the tear and work it into place so it is flat - I use a couple pieces of hard wire about 6 inches long for those places that my fingers won't go. I bought a tube of clear fabric cement at Ace hardware that worked well. Make sure that the entire patch is well coated with glue - the wires or toothpicks help here also. After the glue is placed wipe off as much excess as you can with lacquer thinner and use a toothpick to push the glue out of the perforations, then use duct tape or high grade masking tape to hold the frayed edges of the cover flat. After it dries for a day remove the tape and fill the gaps with Leatherique filler (a couple of thin layers works best) then dye. I've had great results on a couple of cars using Leatherique. Good Luck!

What we like to recomend is getting the back leather off a bad seat. On a 928 it is leather on the back ( not so for 944 and 911's) and it is usually a good color and texture match. My local shop charges about $80 to remove the seat cover and replace that panel with the new donor leather. this can also be done on the upper bolster as well.

Who are you using Mark, I am trying to sell my car and if I can fix the seats for a low $$ amount I am sure it would help it sell. I'd like to get an estimate from them.

No Problem Dean! Those patches came off of the back of my 83 seats from an all leather interior.
