Well, since the seals need to come out for PC I figure I might as well replace them. I don't like the idea of re-using seals in a critical application like this. The front calipers don't look much better than the rears, and I figured there would be no better time to refinish them. The dust seals are just beginning to show signs of cracking. If I were going with the rattle-can approach I would probably just replace the dust seals.

They are defiently NOT 85/86 calipers as those are the same as the 16V S (single piston). 86.5 is when the 4 pistons came out.

Dave you will see how hard the outer seals are to remove and then you have to install them. But if you have new ones i guess that you can destroy the old ones.
BTW I suggest to match up the new seals prior to removal, and if you use a tooth pick to remove the inner seals you wont damage them

Ahhh.. You are correct. My 86.5 is where I came up with that. Are those style only on the 86.5? Did they change again in 87 or was it later?

Well, the whole idea of verifying the measurements was to get the right seals. Running out of time before SFest so once I have all 4 calipers they are coming apart and going to the PC guy.

My understanding is that all rear calipers 86.5-95 are the same. That's what set off the alarm bells in my head that led to this thread.

I was careless, the calipers looked right and it wasn't until I had the pads out that I began to have doubts.

Well, with the realization that the rears are NFG for my purposes I figured I'd better confirm that these will serve my purposes for the front. These are supposed to be 993(NA) front clipers, which are supposed to be the same as S4 front calipers. Bottom line, I need to know if these can be used with the typical adapter that is sold for the 78 -> S4 upgrade and the 993 rotors that are sold for this upgrade.

The upgrade kit lists the 993 calipers, should have no problem.

Yes... but are these REALLY 993 calipers? Taking nothing for granted at this point.

Dave I got an idea , take off your front caliper and see if the rears your selling will bolt on, might be a nice upgrade for and early car but you wont know till you try, the pistons are the right size for front calipers. Just a thought you may have stumbled onto something

Dave, I have a set of S4 rear calipers that I bought from Fabio for $200.00 and that I will let go for that price plus shipping. I have since bought front and rear S4 calipers from Gio so I don't need the ones from Fabio. Let me know if your interested.

Those part numbers come back as a 993 caliper. Also some info on them in a thread you posted in a while back. https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-for-sale.html

Interesting thought Stan, I'll take a look while I have everything apart, if I still have those calipers at that point in time.

Jeff, I found a pair, thanks.

Stolarzj, thanks, I was a bit search-challenged and couldn't find that thread.

Making some progress... still hoping to get it all together this coming weekend, in time for SFest. I was thinking of just cutting the old brake lines and plugging them off while working, but now I'm thinking I'd better take them off nicely in case I need a "Plan B".

Dave-

Whoa- Is that the same caliper, refinished? [Paris] That's hawt! [/Paris] What was your recipe for the re-do? My GTS calipers are in need of attention and I'm NOT going to repeat my disastrous G2 painting mistakes again. Didja PC 'em, then R&R the seals?
