Take the oil pan off and inspect the bearings. The 1988 I am parting out had a blow headgasket, leaky radiator oil cooler and just now I found out it also spun two bearings.

Well since its a 5 speed shouldnt it be okay ? Im not sure but this test is done on Auto transmissions. Can the 5 speeds be prone to Trust-BF ?
As rod bearings go I would check 2 and 6 or just change them. I took 2 S4 motors apart and the 2 and 6 bearings had alittle more wear than the othere ones but they still looked to be good.

They are anywhere nearly as prone, but the thrust bearing can wear from clutch use and now would be the time to check it.

That engine was seized. Heat discoloration on the cheeks at 2/6 journal. Common problem.

Namasgt, i used a plastic bristle brush.

i did check the endplay several times and i got a measurement of .253 to .270
i'm thinking the max .40 but correct me if i'm wrong. i'm also gonna
check one more time with a helper tomorrow. i've included some pics of the bearings and the crank journal, some of them didn't turn out so good. let me know if you see something i don't. to me they seem good. would you change them anyway?

If that's the 2/6 bearing it looks pretty good. The pics aren't very clear of course, but you can mic the journal to see what it's at. I think the crank and bearings are ok, but it's hard to see very well.

yeah i know. i tried to take several pics but they wouldn't come out any better than these. the journal does look very good and the bearings not bad for 90k i guess. debating whether to just replace them now.

Just a suggestion--do you have a "macro" or a "closeup" button on your camera? Looks like the closeups of the bearings are of poorer quality than first pic, which looks OK. Maybe that would help get some clearer pix?

Water is somewhat viscous. I wonder if air would be even better?

Fab an adapter with HomeDespot/Lowes plumbing parts, pressurize it with a MityVac, and see if it holds? One could even put a liquid in the chamber that would be forced past the valve (or not) under pressure. The liquid might make finding the leak-point of a non-obvious leak easier, though I'm not sure what good knowing that would do.

OTOH, there's that old surgeon's maxim that better is the enemy of good.

P.S. Pretty motor.

Gasoline. Low viscosity index, easily avail, leaves a trace on the port runners that can be seen with a flashlight.
