hi guys I'm here. Thanks for most of the posts and the ones who jumped to the wrong conclusions here's the facts:
I am Scottish, first 24 years of my life, so have an accent; audible minority. Have now lived in Western Canada for the past 27 years. I carry a Euro passport. I also carry a Permenant Resident Card for Canada.
I have travelled the world in my careers as a professional engineer for several very large telecommuncation companies so have travelled to many many countries.
The last time I went to the USA they scanned my eye, studied the hell out of my passport, had to get a visa etc etc.
Today the border guard pulled me into their interogation shack, scanned my eye told me it matched their records and my passport but they wanted proof of employment as he was worried that I may just stay south of the border. I didn't have any other than a Visa card our company logo (we run a B&B at home on the farm). Another issue he had was I dont have a street address on any ID...........we live on a farm and only have a legal land description.
I was travelling solo, the wife wasn't there to provide further info.
I'm home now, scotch in hand.

I am embarassed for my country right now - again, thousands of undocumented aliens pour in across the southern border, unmolested and actually protected (in a perverted sense) by our constitutional rights each day, and a sports car guy can't come over for a fun run, even with, evidently, the required minimum paperwork.
This is no 911 thing.
This is sheer lunacy.
We deserve what we get in this country anymore, sadly.
Anyway, Grey Wolf and I will kick back a McCallan or two for you tonight, and we'll post pics of the run tomorrow. We have 4 sharks, 1 930 RUF turbo, and a vette. It'll be fun, and you'll be missed.

When I would watch the Wings play I would swing into Canada w/no problems! I just stated I was going the the Casino and Titty bars. As long as they thought I was leaving Money in Canada they could have given a ****! If I were him I would have waited an Hour or 2 had a few beers and tried again. Prob would have gotten in no problem?

Sorry to hear that.
The new regs went into effect this summer, and suffice to say I'll be shopping up here for a while. (It's like $400 for passports for the family). If Malcolm still holds Scottish citizenship, that's probably a whole other issue..........

OK, I was slow off the mark on that one.
In the 70's, (Yeah, longer hair and louder car), I was deported on the US side of the Detroit tunnel for the same reasons. They (A kid younger than I was at the time and with a chrome 3547 on his hip) thought for some reason that I was going to stay and try to work in the US.
(We, a friend and I were just on a road trip at the time to L.A. just for the Hell of it).
Problem was that I was honest the first time.
Went to another crossing and said we were just going down to visit friends in NY and party and there was no problem....set us back about six hours on the schedule though.
Sometimes it's all in the presentation......
or in current corporate language, "How you position it"...
(We, a friend and I were just on a road trip at the time to L.A. just for the Hell of it).

Few years ago Tim Murphy and I (with the wives) found out we were not able to cross into Canada due to the copious amount of booze we had in the two cars and only four people.
So we either had to dump 90% of our refreshments or somehow squeeze 25 more people into two Porsche’s.
No real point, just felt like sharing. Sucks all around for you and Malcolm. Next time have him take a boat to Mexico and drive up that way.
What paperwork do you need to enter / exit the US from Canada?

You now need a US passport to enter Canada or Mexico.

UK Passport holders have had to use ETSA since January 12th. This applies to all travel to the US, whatever the originating country, whatever the means of transport.

I believe a similar system exists for other passport holders that were previously part of the visa waiver scheme that was put in place some years ago.
I've only used this system once very shortly after it was introduced. I have no doubt that I would have been refused entry if I had forgotten to do so.

Paul - this term "scheme" though used throughout the British Commonwealth it is, here in the U.S., considered a negative term. For example: "And he contrived a scheme to bilk the elderly out of their money."
For those here in the U.S. unfamilar with this common British term it is used in reference to a program or process.
So Paul's statement "....previously part of the visa waiver scheme ...." would most likely have been written by someone from the U.S. as ".... previously part of the visa waiver program ...."
Just trying to keep the proper reference here. A lot of sensitivties about alien (legal/illegal) residents here in the U.S.

You confuse "race" and "nationality" Cheryl. I too am a legal alien here in the United States. And I work every day of my life, pay all my taxes and serve this country very well. I have severe disdain for the policy that says:
