Default 928S4 Dual Electric Fans

Anyone know if the S4 dual electric fans will fit on a euro 1981 928S ? The car has no smog equipment ... Are they any better than the standard belt driven fan and will the electrical system handle them. Thanks.

The electrical system will not handle them directly since they need a completely different 2 part fan controller to work as stock. Could you wire them up differently - yes but that would be a quite different configuration than an S4 has.

As to if they will physically fit - not sure - others can answer that (I'd asusme so with mechanical fan removed)

As I said in a previous thread, the viscous fan with a working auxillary fan should be as good if not better than the S4+ electric fans. Check to make sure the auxillary fan is coming on when it should. Your fan clutch could also be getting old and not have enough fluid in it.

They can run at the same time full speed when engaged. They don't need the controller to work.

I would think to hook one of the fans up to the stock AUX fan wiring and wire the other to a thermostat. Should work great I would think.... Therefore I think I am gonna try it!

There are threads regarding an OEM Ford fan unit (from the 2000 Ford Contour? IIRC) that is an almost exact size as the S4 fan unit. It sells for about $108 for the whole assembly. It's also been said to move alot more air with less amps too...

86'928S Meteor:

I did read that a contour fan works perfect but have not known anyone that has used them. Do you. Also is your 928S upgraded with S4 front and rear bumper covers ? Cause in your profile pic. it looks like an S4

I only know about the Contour fans from forum archive reading. I don't know anyone personaly that has this setup. I do recall reading enough about it that it is the path I intend to take when the time comes to replace my fan shroud (which is shot). For the price of a used fan shroud ($100) I can have a whole new setup fans and all ($108).. With increased CFM and decreased amp load, it seems like a no brainer in my non-concours world. When I do it, I will documant it fully with a writeup.

So, would the Contour setup be able to be interfaced with the S4 controller... or the Contour controller would be used?

Related but slightly OT... I was going to ask about bypassing the S4 controller to have the one or both fans manually operated or with another, more reliable temp sensor-based controller. The S4 system seems to have too many variables to go wrong...

Put relays and fuses between any electric fan and power/control signals.

I'm not familiar with the Contour fans, but top flow is the Lincoln Mark VIII from 1998, then Taurus V6, and Dodge ram charger (dual fan) all of which are sold in large numbers off ebay.

I have a Mark VIII fan on my 83, and while it blows air like crazy, I don't have all the electrical issues worked out (35 run amps, 3x that to start).

As much as I like going electric, my 85 Euro is the coolest running and most stable with the factory clutch fan.

The S4 and I suspect the Contour controller are not simple thermostats, they get a control signal from the engine management computers.

Sorry Mike, I meant temp sensor... not thermostat (I fixed my post). If a controller (or fans directly) could be sensor-activated vs. the engine management computers -I think that would be a step forward in reliability, considering how many electrical gremlins exist in the collective factory 928 system.
