Default ST2 and emissions

Can the ST2 be used to help a car pass emissions? If so, has anyone tried this to determine optimum maps for clean running?

You car has an O2 sensor and cats. So if LH, O2 sensor and cats are doing their job, then you should have no trouble passing emmissions testing.

The ST2 won't be able to make the car run leaner than it should, because the LH is following the O2 loop. The ST2 might help you identify a problem, if one exists.

If your car is running open loop, then yes, you can use the ST2 to tune the map for whatever A/F ratio you desire.

Thanks for the info! I was just curious because I will be moving to california, land of stringent emission control, from Maryland, where they don't even have the necessary equipment to test a 928. Consequently, I have no idea about the condition of the system, and I was just wondering if there were alternate means beyond buying a new set of cats, etc.

Does you car not have cats ? Or do you believe they are faulty ?

I have no reason to think they are faulty, but I am going to be a graduate student, so I will have very little money (I currently am working as a Lab Manager, and can afford to maintain my 928 with no difficulty). Consequently, I need to budget repairs and components very carefully. With that in mind, I wanted to figure out the potential cost of repairs for systems that I don't know enough about. I have lots of confidence in the engine (just did TB/WP 6k miles ago), but the cats and computers are the ones that have been in the car since I bought it in '03, so I don't know when they may fail, and must plan accordingly.

I know you feel. I'm paying for school still, and saving for a house and wdding ring at the same time while struggling to maintain this car too.

Somehow it's working....I think.

EZK ECUs have a good reliability record and only rarely fail. S4 and later LH have well known weaknesses and can and do fail.

20% bio ethanol on the tank will get you through

My 90' S4 has a cat-delete and X-pipe and the guys at the MOT are amazed by the CO values "it's runs cleaner than cars with cats" was a comment I got once

Just drive a lot after the test to use up a couple tanks of regular fuel to clean the ethanol out of the system.

Haha yeah, I know a guy who swipes methanol out of his lab to drop in his tank when he goes to get his emissions checked, does the same thing.
