Thanks to all....problem solved.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and offers. This is a great group of enthusiasts and the help is appreciated. I will reciprocate whenever and however I can.
Here's how the problem is solved for now.
First of all, the high-tech solutions were intriguing, but I decided to wait on something so sophisticated until I can perfect something that will do a retinal scan of the kitties and throwing up an invisible force-field when one of them approaches the car. Well, OK--they were really just over my head and out-of-reach of my capabilities.
Karl Ruiter, who turns out to have a place about 3.5 miles from me in South Pasadena generously offered me a very nice cover that he had "left-over" from an OB car. I picked it up from storage, took it to the laundromat commercial washers and cleaned it up and it's just what the doctor ordered: a thick twill on the upper side and a very soft flannel-like bottom side. Mirror pockets and everything. It was made for an OB, but fits the S4 OK--a little snug in the back and front, but it's so soft that I don't think it will be a problem as long as I keep it clean.
I also followed Dr. Bob's advice and picked up a couple of the moving blankets at Harbor Freight. 72" x 80" and $10/each. I got these before I saw the cover and even though I think the cover itself is thick enough to prevent almost any possibility of claw scratches, when I throw those blankets on top, Sharky is armor-plated from any and all cat attacks.
Again thanks to all and especially to Karl--it's a perfect solution! And no animals were harmed in this production....

Nice to see that old cover washed up, looking good, and going to use. I bought it at least 20 years ago when I was reassembling my '82 onto a fresh unibody. The new body had all fresh paint so I wanted to keep my cats off. In the year of so I was putting all the parts on the new body in my landlady's garage I would chase the cats out when I caught them in there and they retaliated by spraying when they could sneak past.
