I'm looking to do a Provent install at the same time the intake is off and as part of that I hope to tidy things up by getting rid of the breather hoses running over the Porsche lettering on the covers - I'm optimistic it will be quite doable. If course the intake tubes partially obscure them too...

Getting rid of blemishes is largely in the prep...

Jarrod - very nicely done - but I wasn't really even considering paint - with paint a plus is that you do have the option of some sanding/filling/sanding, priming & final finishing.

Why didn't you just remove the breather ports befoire paint?

Thanks Alan. In answer to your question, it seemed easier and just as effective to tape 'em off. Oh, and the intake was painted in-situ.

BTW-I like the crinkle, but wanted to keep the factory look on my car.

Jarrod:
That looks very nice. How is it holding up over time? Can you give detail about what products you used?

Paint is nice but will yellow over time > 5 years, I like Andrews and IMHO black holds up the best and has a nice machine look.

But painting gives you an excuse to re-do it

So if you go with Red, and it begins to yellow, do you get orange?

Word of caution regarding powercoating ... the heat required to bake the paint can warp your intake.
I had mine powdercoated and I did not check the flatness of the intake before putting it together. As soon as I started the engine, it sounded like a rape whistle. I had to pull the manifold off again and mill it flat ... not fun.

if you remove the cam covers then you should also replace the O rings on the elbos they have a tendency to leak after 25 years of service

The heat "required" for powder coat doesn't warp the intake...
Although the heat that some powder coaters "use" may.
The amount of energy used in prep is excessive, but a baby smooth gloss surface is obtainable. I'm on the boat, but will post photo's of the last two 86's I just completed this week. Here is a teaser from the computer, this one is blue translucent over chrome, and the other is red translucent over chrome.

Mike if you want to add some protection to the wing boxes where the tubes will run just add some 3M paint protectant film to the areas where the intake tubes rub.
This will protect the clear,. Nice intake by the way

Mine was powdercoated in a red textured finish in Dec. 2005. I would do it again immediately. Easy to keep clean, sturdy and good looking even after 4 years.

I didnt powdercoat the wrinkle because it looks more like a simulated wrinkle then the true wrinkle finish. Ferrari doesnt use a powdercoating process for their covers FWIW, they use a paint system, what that system is i couldnt tell you.

I media blasted the intake and cam covers then alodine bathed them, i primed them out of a rattle can then followed with rattle can wrinkle from which brand i forget. I wasnt happy with the grey color of the wrinkle and the red wrinkle turned out like oxblood so i followed with a single coat of aluminum paint on the wrinkle and a bright red over the wrinkle on the cam covers and ended up with this.

The Ferrari F550 Maranello was my inspiration.

I will be buying a reddish colored GTS and am still debating what to do with those covers. I am thinking of going with gloss black intake and cam covers with nickel plating for all the shiny buts instead of the stock cad plating. But since this thread came up maybe i would go with wrinkle black, some silver colored lettering or exterior color matched letters with the nickel plated bolts and fasteners.

To get a good wrinkle out of a can though, you need to put it on heavy and more importantly evenly. So if its heavy all the way round or even not so heavy all the way round you will get a very consistent finish. It also needs to go in an oven to really get it to wrinkle. In the example below, i was much happier with the finish of the cam covers then with the intake itself.
