Wow, thanks for your feedback! Honestly, my instinct goes for the GTS...the color combo is amazing, it's one of the last built (8/1995), but...the are some issues about the oil consumption/ TBFailure, not to mention the availability of parts ( quarter panels for ex, in the event that something happens). With the GT( which has the basic S4 bodywork) there is less hassle to find parts ( I've done some research on the Internet and found what headache can cause finding some specific parts for GTS). Love them both as I'm an enthusiast, but I intend to drive the car rather than keep it in the garage. So here I go again...is there so much difference in driving those cars?

I've been told that my previous GT was about as fast as a GTS auto. I don't know, if that means my GT was particularly strong, or that the difference really isn't that big.

I hear of 2/6 rod bearing failures in both GT and GTS engines, if they get driven at Vmax on the Autobahn for too long. Usually, a left bender gets them, after they have burnt some oil already.

Do you prefer to drive cars with automatic or with manual transmission?

If you frequently drive in heavy traffic, or if you have short legs, the manual car might not be ideal. Remember that you can shift the automatic manually as well, and many of us do so regularly. These transmissions take it with stride.

As to some of the earlier suggestions for modifications, I don't know how strict Romania is in terms of vehicle inspections and emissions controls. You'd never get an X-Pipe through the German vehicle inspection or smog inspection.

Another thing to consider is that you say you want to drive the car. If that means you'll be driving it daily, the black leather interior would be easier to maintain. Lighter colors, including red, will darken over time, it's hard to match touch-up dyes, and red is more sensitive to fading in the sunlight.

Hope this helps a bit.

With 928s being the age they are, the differences in individual cars' conditions will be greater than the differences between models when new. So you really need to inspect both cars and drive them to see what's what.

After that, the difference in driving experience between auto manual is likewise greater than the difference between models. So assuming both cars are very good condition, you need to decide whether you want a manual or an auto as they are completely different.

Whatever you do, don't decide on the basis of GTS rear fenders, gorgeous though they are!

I got the impression ( from readers) that the GT is not so torquey low in the revs, where the GTS has more grunt, as this influences the around-town drivability. Also, are there big differences in mpg (or l/100km)?

If the GT is running right, you will have no problems with low-down grunt. It's a 5 litre V8 don't forget. Around town driveability is more about whether you like clutching and declutching in traffic vs. lazing along in the auto with your left leg relaxed.

Having said that the GTS is the most torquey 928 engine by a long way. Again, the differences between the cars' respective conditions will be greater than the differences between them when new.

What are you driving now?

My 91 GT did not seem to have quite as much low end torque as my S4 (even though torque was still plentiful). The GT really came to life above 4000 rpm, which I didn't do all that often. But when I did - boy, that was fun!!! It almost felt like a turbo boost kicked-in.

If I launched hard from standstill, it would "chirp" the tires when I let the clutch out in 2nd. It did have the standard 16" wheels, which are totally inadequate for a GT.

Now I'm driving (don't laugh..!) daily a '86 VW Scirocco with a modified 1.8l G60 supercharged engine(aprox.200bhp/ 850kg). And yes, it beats the pants of any normaly aspirated Carrera made prior to MY2000, although I had some hard times with a CL 550 AMG on quarter mile. A also drive a Alfa Romeo Brera (3.2V6, 260bhp) and a Mini Cooper (my wife's car).

I love the exterior design of the Brera. That's a very beautiful car! What color is yours?

GT is the best 928. Half the changes made in the GTS weren't improvements, in my opinion. Furthermore, 5-speed trumps on top of that, so to me this would be a no-brainer.

Decide if you want a manual or one of those silly automatics.

Then forget that decision and buy the GT

When you see, drive, and inspect both cars (I suspect 100 pt Porsche inspection as useful as freckles on my rear end, you need a 928 specialist to inspect before buying) a choice should be obvious.

Having 928 inspected in Europe by someone who knows what they are doing is a problem. In most cases Porsche dealer is last place to take them.

If GTS were 5sp it would be easy choice. But since its from Quatar and automatic its not so clear. Ex Gulf cars aren't always as good as low km's makes one believe. They have particulary tough life down there.

GT and 5sp GTS rev too much for my liking in highway speed. Automatic GTS isn't much better. All of them could use extra gear.

Low end torque on the GT is good, but not as good as an S4 or GTS. As Nicole mentioned, the GT pulls like a freight train which overdosed on nitrous oxide above 4000RPM. While most cars start to lose steam at the higher RPM's the GT does the exact opposite, pretty amazing how much the engines love to rev.

Bogdan, you need to drive / cadge a ride in a 5 speed 928 and an auto and decide which tranny suits you best.

I agree with the other poster who said beware low km cars from the Gulf. I started my 928 life with a euro S2 auto (310bhp) which I loved, but once I'd been in a manual I simply had to change. Went to an S4 manual with LSD and x pipes (pretty similar to a GT driving experience) and then went backwards to a 79 which I've customised with a 4.7 litre 16v engine and S4 brakes and suspension.

They are fabulous cars which drive very differently to lightweights like your Scirocco. They are heavy but the chassis is great once you get used to it, it really gets communicative above 60mph.

Cheers,

Joel
