Every now and then i see people saying they loved their 928 more than their 911's, having owned both.

But is this the general truth? Never seen the opposite, so bring on your experiences!

edit: yes i know they are very different, but what would you keep if you could only have one

I have owned 944, 911 and 928 and I love all equally. Each has very different characteristics, and each is, in itself, a wonderful Porsche. Today I have 2 928's. But I plan on buying a Boxster, and an early 911 like I used to have, also. Love the 944 sunroof and sporty looks; love the 911 targa top and timeless looks, love the 928's V8 and supercar looks. Hands-down the one that has given the most opportunity and versatility for weight loss, improvements, streamlining, supercharging, many options ... is the 928.

When asked, I always say they are both wonderful cars, and compare the two like this....
If I drive the 911 to the store, it's a blast, and I climb out feeling like I just crossed the entire state....
If I drive the 928 across the entire state, it's a blast, and I hop out feeling like I just took a drive to the store....

I've owned both. Back in the 70's I owned a 911T, factory A/C, 5speed, Fukes. Car ran great as long as it wasn't babied. The only mechinical problen was a broken rollpin that held the clutch cable, at the trans. The interior was another matter. The phillips head bolts that held the seat back in place were always backing out. the seat covers were very cheezie and always looked like crap. Car was nothing like my shark. The shark is a very refined touring car. It will blow the doors of most Vetts, or 911's. The 911 was noisey, the shark is very quiet. I don't know why it doesn't have a greater following. I really enjoy driving it. I've got a 74 Pantera "L", and it can't compare to the shark. The Pantera gets just as many looks too. The Pantera is highly modified, maybe a little faster, but it eats fuel like I own an oil company. The Porsche gets great mileage. The only draw back is it is a very complex automobile, and if you don't keep up on the maintance it's not very forgiving. I think its one of the best cars ever made, and makes a 911 look like an over priced VW.

Love 'em both.

Currently have a '91 928GT and a '07 911GT3.

Both are wonderful cars but with different characteristics. One aspect of the 928 that appeals to me is that you don't see many of them.

I was just chatting with one of the local fellows yesterday.

He said he wanted to move to europe and sell everything he has here, well everything but the 928. He said he would sell the 911, but he will never sell the 928.

I agree the others. Both are great cars both have equal # of pros and cons but different ones. It all depends on what you plan on doing with them. I also can say my 964 C2 is totally different but more similar to my turbo. The newer 996/997's are much more like a 928 than the older 911's.

If i had to choose it would be the turbo 1st with my GTS second but just a hair over the C2. The C2 and GTS are about equal for acceleration the C2 is a superior handling car but the GTS is just such a refined comfortable driving car with superior torque to the C2 and puts you into the seat much more than the C2. It also has much more usable room. I could drive the GTS cross country and never get bored and the faster you go the better the drive. The C2 is a fun car on tight roads and tracks and lots of maneuverability. The turbo is a hyper beast, quick revving strong instantaneous power and amazing handling although if you press the accelerator more than half way be prepared to hold on and enjoy the ride. The C2 is probably the most boring on an open road but most exciting on the twisties. The GTS is most comfortable and enjoyable to drive on an open road but least exciting in the twisties although very capable. the turbo is insane no matter what your on.

I couldn't decide which I liked best so I found one of each in the best shape I could find.

loved them both also....Sold the 911, The 928 is such a comfortable cruiser

They're both very nice cars, but if I had a 911 I don't think I'd drive it as much. So do you want a car you can drive, or a car you're just going to show? If you want bragging rights, 911's get a ton more respect. If you want something to cruise around in and blow the doors off of lesser vehicles, then a 928 is where it's at.

My 2 cents,
For comfort the 928,
For top speed I like the 928,
For simplicity I like the 911 ( Air cooled)
For aftermarket stuff I like the 911,
Two very different cars and I am glad I own both and I drive each very differently

I've been driving my wife's 996 cab while my 928 has been down for repairs. The more I drive it, the more I like it compared to the 928. It's just a more modern car, everything works, the steering and accelerator are very light, the AC vents blow in the right places, etc. It's not my favorite body style, but it's a lot of car for the money and a pure delight to drive.

I like my 928, but there are several quirky things in the design dating back to the 70s that you wouldn't get in a newer car. Now, if you're talking about an '88 911 vs and '88 928, it'd be a different story.

Agreed with Brian. Age matters. To address one point: Evewryone always says the 928 is a "luxury touring car". Yes, it can be and the Pre-89 autos (except Euro) are that. But ... you take a 5-speed 928 and lose some weight and complication and you have what I have been enjoying for a decade .. a BEAST. So, my 928 ... on the way to the store ... scares the living daylights out of me, and the 911 felt like a smaller, nimbler sister.

True a 928 on a diet is a different animal. They were heavy cars for their day although with most performance cars today weighing in as heavy or heavier than my GTS, boy have times changed.

I will say that even at 3505 pounds it is a great car and one of the few Porsche's I have owned i wouldn't change much about. If I could put it on a diet without loosing the feel and creature comforts I would but I don't think there is anything substantial enough to remove to make it worth doing.

I find Porsche was always shy something on the 911 no matter what MY. Although they are much easier to modify to your specific tastes than a 928. So it is a toss up and one day I lean towards selling the 928 and then I drive it again and ask myself if I am crazy for even thinking it. I do the same with the C2 and again i drive it and say the same thing.

Although for me I don't think I could ever sell the turbo but I am not too good at selling, just buying. LOL


I say if you can own one of each (good example as either can be a nightmare if not properly cared for) and use each as it was intended, you will never be disappointed in either.
