At one time certain BMW's are were sold in the US with skinner tires on the front to induce understeer
for the lawsuit happy US market.

Article on the subject:

Thread on the same subject in the racing forum around the above article:

The only problem is 7" & 8" wheels on the back of a 928 look downright silly.

Hacker...verrry interesting posts and article. Yeah I'm still a little confused but I think I get it and I agree 7" is way too small (so does my wife). 8 1/2's I could probably live with all the way around and still feel like my man-tire-hood isn't gonna be visually challenged by Hondas and Saturns. Still looking for more imput.

Hi Paul, I have 17" x 9" custom rims ET 65 (Simmons), spacers on the rear and run 255s all round on my S4. Works well, but the steering on the front is marginally too heavy at low speeds. Track car has another set of the same rims. Currently running 255s all round on it as well. I have run 275s on the back but room is tight on a 78 and the size was not easily available when I changed brands. I dont notice any heavy steering on the track car, but it does have a new steering rack.

Paul, Keep in mind that low profile tires, (40) series or lower may not give much margin for potholes in the poor pavement in most Michigan cities. One reason for using 17 inch wheels vs 18 inch. I have lost two wheels over the years in Ann Arbor.

See you Saturday.

Many here believe that big front rubber is what's missing on our cars, and that all 4 the same (or nearly the same) is the way to go.
I have 265 all around and the car feels very balanced and neutral. It is the way they came like JB says from '78 to '86.
All the 911 take offs have a much wider rear wheel and skinnier front; looks good but increases push/understeer.

Ditto that understeer was a factory preference for the unwashed masses. Loss of control via understeer is generally safer than an oversteer situation.

I recently upped the fronts on my 944S2 to match the 8" rears, and liked the way it handled at our most recent DE. Have been running DE's with RA1's, and there was indeed less understeer with the larger fronts (245/16's). Will be using all 4 remaining 7-inchers for my street tires from now on.
