Default Cheap parts, Cheap or Impending Doom?

The $125 Autozone Bosch ISV thread has me doing some searching on parts, with some of the highlights linked here.

Nice basic article on counterfeit parts.

I've heard that Autozone has pretty good rebuilt steering racks...apparently rebuilt in Phoenix, AZ...same place that others have them done. I've not tried them but they may have a good warantee. Anyone tried these?

Also, looking at different parts on my Pcars I see VW and Audi written on some of them....and Bosch parts are a mystery but sometimes interchangeable on various cars.

& your point is?

Acdelco supply auto parts that are claimed to meet OE standards but at lower prices so you are supportive of this approach?

I only buy parts from a dealership if I have to.

OEM parts from trusted sources are the same parts. The point of the first link was that when less than trusted sources are used the parts may be counterfeit, same box, same appearance, but a cheap copy of the real part internally.

Beyond that the three links go to news letters not normally available to the general public, with different perspectives on many parts related issues.

But what is a trusted source? Quoting from the article "GM alone
has storerooms filled with seized oil filters that don’t filter and spark plugs
that don’t spark."
Looks like this stuff is everywhere?

Wow, a mother and her infant died for the profit of a $20 dollar "brake pad". I would love to have 5 minutes with the guy that sold it to her...

Or with the guy that put them in.

I doubt - but I could be wrong - that you can make brake pads out of grass and wood and have them look like real brake pads.

I trust my sources. But, I also check each part before it goes in.

And people would buy if they were cheaper than others.
